What are you reading?

Appreciate you.

My digital libraries don’t have them. Will these titles be enough to get me back to a physical location? Could be!

You can get a free e-reader version here: The History of Herodotus — Volume 1 by Herodotus | Project Gutenberg

Rousseau was a giant wanker and wrong about most things.

Also the Robertson book said that he had five children with his partner, and he made her send all of them to a foundling hospital, basically an orphanage, where they all likely died. So yeah, put me down for team Voltaire

This might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but Civilization Before Greece and Rome, by Saggs, is pretty good. It’s a little dry but it covers the basics, with respect to the Mediterranean area, anyway. It pretty much ignores the Americas, China, India, and Japan etc IIRC.

I appreciate all recommendations. Especially if I go to a physical bookstore, it’s great to pick up and flip through a few on the way to deciding on one.

If you want to save a couple of dollars, and this is sufficient, lmk and I will media mail it to you.

Released my interview through Queer History with Jewish author Naomi Alderman about writing as therapy, making her first TV show, trans and intersex rep in The Power, and how to know if you’ve joined the resistance.

It’s on Substack and YouTube.

Found out that it’s only 15 hours a month. Too good to be true. Oh well found out my city made a virtual library so I’ll be able to apply to get Libby etc.

I finished Invisible Child by Andrea Elliott. The time and care she put into this book… It is wonderful and absolutely gutting.

I read that a couple months ago and agree, great book, gutting

Finished “The Hobbit” on audible now. I really enjoyed it and I think I didnt even miss much through being distracted or daydreaming. Unfortunately it also brought back how much they went offscript for the film and I hated it. Watched parts of the last movie yesterday and I didnt like it at all. I only went to the cinema for the first one I think and partly fall asleep.

Meanwhile I also try to force myself to read a chapter before going to bed so I am now halfway through “Dune”. The first part was a good read but I really dont like how Paul changed into being a prick now that he knows he is special..

That’s nice. Do you think you’ll listen to the other books?

I have been thinking of checking out the new Lord of the Rings audiobooks. I think there was a full dramatization of the audiobook using different actors for different characters, but I see also there’s a much more recent publication read by Andy Serkis/Gollum, whose talent at performance can only be humbly acknowledged.

I am contemplating between the World War Z you suggested or I might give HP a try. Lord of the Rings is on the list as well. Since english isnt my native language I am not sure how difficult it is too follow a heavy book like LotR with lots of explanations. Its not that I dont understand everything but its a lot more work during listening. Thats a reason why I didnt continue with “Lonesome Dove” so far. The accents make it even more demanding to follow along.

I thought wold war z was interesting but ultimately unfufilling. I dont know how hard lord of the rings would be. I imagine it’d be harder than normal because of the medieval setting and the host of not normally used words that go along with it.

Go Harry Potter.

I hope you’ll give World War Z a try. I enjoyed the movie adaptation okay, but the audiobook shows just how good an anthology series would be.

I hear you about language and accents. Dialects can make that a tough one even if it’s your native language. Have you heard of the Redwall series?

It’s like fantasy but where the main characters are mice and other rodents instead of humans. The written dialogue contained so many gestures toward thick accents that I couldn’t really read it.

Nope never heard of it. Too many options not enough time or bad time management.

I just saw that HP is included in my audible Abo so I dont have to use a credit for that. Thats good since I go to Prague for some poker next week and I need something for the train ride. But it gives me the option to use my monthly free credit for the zombies.
I also dont want fantasy becoming the overwhelming majority of my reading so after I finished Dune I will move towards Empire of the Summer Moon. Since there will be a Shogun series soon its tempting to read that book as well before the release. There is always the risk that I will dislike the movies or tv shows when they deviate on certain scenes too much from the book.

I also found an old copy of *The Last of the Mohicans." on the attic of my parents. I have read a version years ago but I always had a faible of this time in history(and the movie) and I could see me reading all 5 books. Sometimes it feels like waste of time to read a book a 2nd time when you have so many options.
