What are you reading?

I have now. Way, way too slow-paced imo (like did they think Joyce thought punctuation was decorative?) and, ultimately, illustrative of the occasional utter futility of adaptation.

Posting this here because I havenā€™t read it yet, but itā€™s on the table and maybe posting here will motivate me.
Michael Friedman, Dynamics of Reason: The 1999 Kant Lectures at Stanford University

Someone seems to have uploaded a copy. http://strangebeautiful.com/other-texts/friedman-dyns-reason.pdf

Finished run for something, great book if you are interested in running for office or working on a campaign.

I picked up a used copy of the conscience of a liberal by Paul krugman. Never really read any of his stuff and just realized that it was written back before Obama. The paperback copy I have has a updated introduction from right after Obama won.

Some things I found interesting from his introduction:

He says the nation is center left.
Also when talking about Obamaā€™s upcoming term and comparing it to the majorities that Clinton had and how Clinton struggled to get healthcare reform done, read below especially the note about republicans in senate being accommodating lol.

Almost done reading A Warning, by Anonymous. Theyā€™re basically saying everything thatā€™s been reported by the pressā€“all the leaksā€“has been true, and specifically call out a couple of additional areas they think Congress should investigate.

Thereā€™s a lot of ā€œthe Democrats have been pretty extreme in their opposition to Trump,ā€ with the implication that it is unfair and partisan, followed by ā€œall the criticism is true,ā€ or ā€œitā€™s worse than you think.ā€

Finished conscience of a liberal. It was enjoyable and surprisingly he was very focused on healthcare and this was before Obamacare. From what he wrote he was hoping for more than Obamacare at the time but I guess arenā€™t we all?

I also read ā€œblack boxā€ by Jennifer Egan, a short story, that was originally put on twitter over a few nights so itā€™s written in tweets basically. It was interesting and enjoyable.

Oh and I just started a couple others.

Tear down this myth by will bunch, about the myth of ronald Reagan on the right.

Atomic Habits by James clear, hoping this helps me set and keep some good habits this year

got this on audible and itā€™s confirmed really good. yeah probably the best fiction book iā€™ve listened to since dark forest

Finished Stillness is the Key for the 3rd time.

First book in as long as I can remember that I started to read again as soon as I finished.

Then I proceeded to start it a 3rd time.

Currently reading: Why we sleep by Matthew Walker.
Havenā€™t finished it yet but already canā€™t recommend it enough. Should be a must read for every single person that can read!

What do you like about it? Is it primarily science or self-help?

Itā€™s almost all science. Iā€™m about 75% in and have not yet encountered much self-help about sleeping yet, although I think he will discuss some advice at the end. However it mainly discusses the different stages of sleep and their benefits and more, how extremely bad it is to miss out on certain stages of sleep.

I never realized how important sleep was until I read this book and will not take sleeping for granted at all anymore.

Iā€™ve been using WHOOP to track my sleep the last 90 days or so and now itā€™s a priority for me to get at least 7 hours a night.

How much REM and Deep sleep do we need to get on average per night?

When I was younger I got by on 4-6 hours but got burned out and eventually said fuck it, Iā€™m going to sleep as much as I want. It made a big mental difference not to sleepwalk through the day.

I was surprised my friend Iā€™ve been supporting through her husbandā€™s hospital stay had never read The Little Prince. Sheā€™s also been sleep deprived to the point of exhaustion, spending too many nights in the ICU. So last night I started reading TLP to her while we sat there. Put her to sleep in record time.

in the book he mainly recommends 7-9 hours of sleep. Basically never less than 7.

Most def read this book and see what was going on during that period of your life! Youā€™re not gonna be happy with it though :D

The Coddling of the American Mind a Book by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt

any of you cats read it or seen discussions?

Finished reading the Hyperion Cantos

I love me some good setup to a series, and book 1 is good of a setup as Iā€™ve read.

Book 2 is still real real good shit.

Book 3 and 4 I get it and enjoyed, but I feel like 100-200 pages could have been cut.

But goddamn what an absolutely epic Science Fiction series.

Maybe switch to short stories for a while so you can get through one all the way.
