What’s a good target to buy up, then?
I went to my first protest today (yay! I’m not just a shit poster on the Internet!) Good news and Bad news. The good news is the turnout far exceeded my expectations. It was in a North county coastal california town in San Diego county. I don’t about the numbers, but we were on both sides of the South Coast highway for two, three long blocks. Some chanting (most of it lame “hey, hey, ho, ho, Donald Trump has got to go!’. He just got elected, where’s he going?). Lots of hilarious signs. I don’t have a lot of pictures but I’ll upload them later if I find any worthy ones. The bad news is that most of the people were old. There was some young and some middle aged, but a lot of 60+ people.
Could copy this word for word for the one near me 3000+ miles away.
Your weather was probably better.
Can’t march because of my knee but these look good from the couch
This might be hard to do because we have competing aims. We want to create/enhance the impression of a shortage, and focus on businesses like Target/Walmart, but we don’t want to harm e.g. local grocers. We don’t want items that poor people need or are perishable unless we plan to donate them to charity or something. Big ticket items, clothing, and electronics are out I would think. That leaves household stuff and groceries. Probably want to choose items that are already in short supply and/or are going to get hit by tariffs. So probably not, say, toilet paper? That eliminates a lot. What’s left? Coffee, cocoa, vanilla, tea, stuff like that.
I’ll post some pictures from Salt Lake City later. I won’t guess the number, but it was the biggest protest at the Capitol I’ve ever seen. Local TV did helicopter coverage so there should be some aerial shots. MAGA was not out in force, fortunately. Probably couldn’t get in because of traffic, which was brutal for anyone driving. I have no idea how this many people managed to get here.
I think there were 10k+ people in Torrance, CA, which is the 8th largest city in Los Angeles County.
A speaker announced 10k here but, uh, idk maybe rounded up. This video gives you some idea. There was a big cheer when they announced Bernie coming next week. Pretty good energy overall.
I’m seeing Bernie and AOC next weekend. Neil Young and Joan Baez are going to be there. Probably will be a big crowd.
I don’t think AOC will be here but I’d like to see Bernie. Kind of a hike from here but maybe I’ll make a day of it and hang out at the university library. The Huntsman Center holds 15k. Let’s see if Bernie can fill it on his own.
We’re planning to take the mass transit that Los Angeles is so famous for.
Oh, I’ve accepted that anything reasonable is going to hurt local grocers and poor people. This isn’t some sort of fake harm. This is real harm to real people. The more obvious the harm, the better.
I was thinking…what if you could wipe out your local supply of olive oil? Sure, people could just switch to a different oil, but it would affect people.
italians been known to hang leaders from bridges, careful with the olive oil…
From local TV KSL helicopter over yesterday’s protest. It was a little cool so I was basking in the sun and reflected heat from the building. Got a few comments on my shirt and a “Hell yeah, brother!”
As usual the dogs were the best part.
Coffee seems like an obvious target. Little domestic production, considered a daily use/staple good in many households, substitutes are considered inferior by many people, would be an obvious thing for local news hosts to banter about, etc. Can be clearly linked to tariffs b/c such a high % is imported.

That sounds like a plus.
I’ve been watching youtube videos on what typical meals were like in various countries during WWII. Apparently bananas basically didn’t exist in the UK for almost a generation (no domestic production, and when uboats were patroling the Atlantic, trying to squeeze in a few shipments of bananas wasn’t really a priority). The recipe for faux banana cream will not do anything to break down British food stereotypes.
