I thought it was verdict, which I think is pretty clearly a decision. Was it supposed to be something else?

It’s voir dire - which is the process by which prospective jurors are questioned to see if they will be chosen for the jury (it also applies to the questioning of expert witnesses to see if they are qualified to be an expert). Based on their answers to in the voir dire, jurors can be challenged by either side and the judge will decide whether to seat them, but my understanding is that the voir dire only means the questioning process.

It can’t be voir dire. Voir means “to see” and dire means “to speak”. There is nothing about truth in the etymology. Also it makes no sense for the reason you said. Verdict on the other hand has the correct etymology and is a decision. From wikipedia:

The term “verdict”, from the Latin veredictum , literally means “to say the truth” and is derived from Middle English verdit , from Anglo-Norman: a compound of ver (“true”, from the Latin vērus ) and dit (“speech”, from the Latin dictum , the neuter past participle of dīcere , to say).

I guess the only problem is wiki says it comes from Anglo-Norman instead of Old French as in the question.

EDIT: actually the voir in voir dire is not “to see” and is closer to truth. Still think verdict makes sense as an answer.

EDIT2: apparently Anglo-Norman is technically an old dialect of French.

You clearly know more about language than I do, so won’t try to argue that aspect at all.

I had just googled “Old French ‘to speak the truth’” and got voir dire, so that was my only basis.

Voir Dire was my first instinct too. Felt wrong because, as you say, it’s not a decision. Prob took me another 5 min to think of verdict.

I actually said voir dire based on the meaning, then I realized I didn’t read the entire question. Verdict has to be right.
