Walrus Quarantine Version 1 - Reveal Thread

Midge Ure - The Man Who Sold The World – All-InFlynn
Postmodern Jukebox ft Puddles Pity Party – Royals – JohnnyTruant
Nirvana - Love Buzz – miliboo
Within Temptation – Skyfall – eyebooger
Bill Withers – cassette
No Doubt - It’s My Life – TheDuker

Wow you know where I live and you chose not to submit Linda Ronstadt? Foolish. (probably wouldn’t have helped, I’m not actually from Tucson so I’m not inextricably linked to her, although I do like her and this cover). It probably would have placed similarly but only gave it one listen so far.

Yeah I’m listening to the song you posted now, gotta do a few things and then will continue the write up.

I posted a song?

Oh I got you and cassette confused. Have you claimed a song in the walrus yet?

Nope, still going strong

Alright the top five in this category get an honorary podium, as I felt they were a cut above the rest. Places two through five were pretty fluid but there was a clear winner for me. Unfortunately these were largely covers that I was already familiar with but there were also a couple of nice surprises. Without further ado, 5th place and 8 points goes to:

Chris Cornell - Nothing Compares 2U

This to me is a masterclass is covering a song without changing it too much yet still making it your own The Sinead O’Connor and Prince versions are also great, to be fair, but they feel more like songs made for the radio whereas this sounds like something sung to a specific person.

In fourth place with 9 points:

Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band

Wow what a surprising delight, from the rare combination of a band I’ve never heard of covering a song I wasn’t familiar with. Of all the submissions I think this is the cover that is least like the original, yet another song by Nirvana that I didn’t care for. I’m not smart enough to describe what this is like, maybe someone else can do it better? Reminds me of a raspy James Brown singing bluesy rock? Anyhow I love it and it would have scored higher if I had discouraged more well-known songs but unfortunately I had a hard time putting it above those. Kudos to whoever submitted this because I doubt I’ve ever given any inkling that I would enjoy something like this, but I did, and thoroughly. I feel like this is a seities pick and Chris Cornell was CanadaMatt but guess we’ll see.

Yup you nailed it, this was me. Came across this months ago and have been waiting for a “Covers” Walrus category ever since.

Really glad you enjoyed it. I listened to Nevermind at least hundreds of times and put this cover above the original.

Nailed it, Cornell was a Canada family joint.

Here is the song the significant other of the submitter would have chosen.

Actually, the submitter prefers the studio version.

In third place with 10 points and the bronze medal:

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower

Maybe the most famous cover of all time. We’ve all heard it, probably a million times, but I still couldn’t put it any lower than this because it’s a damned amazing song, with Jimi seemingly at the apex of his guitar powers. This and second place were basically tied so I went with my criteria in the OP that showing me something new would be a tiebreaker. I’m surprised that the original Bob Dylan song has sort of the same cadence as this version but they aren’t really that similar otherwise. In the YouTube comments, someone quotes Dylan telling Jimi “That’s your song, I just wrote it.” I’d be surprised if this wasn’t a classic microbet pick.

I like this less than the official submission fwiw, quite a bit less.

Dayum this is good. My fave of the round so far.

Seities really nailed that choice, just got a little unlucky.

Good to know, I will report such to my wife.

Let’s finish this up while we have time. In second place with 11 points:

Gary Clark Jr. - Third Stone from the Sun/If You Love Me Like You Say

Damn, this track is sizzling, ironically bumping Jimi down a slot with his own song. When I first opened this 9+ minute song with a slash in it’s name by “Blak & Blu 11”, I figured I was in for a world of hurt. Instead it’s a rocking mashup by Gary Clark Jr. (I guess Blak & Blue is the name of the album) of a Hendrix instrumental and a blues song by Albert Collins. The guitar is so good that I don’t care how long the song goes on while the vocals are gritty and soulful. I’ve heard some Gary Clark stuff that I don’t care for and some that’s pretty good but I didn’t realize he was making music that was this good. Not sure who submitted this because I forget who is left but well done, another great selection that simply got unlucky when going up against a monster submission.

Yeah that was mine. Definitely my favorite song by Gary Clark that I’ve heard.

If you like covers, BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge has a ton of them. Mostly newer artists covering their contemporaries.
