Below you can find all categories. We have 14 entrants in total, which means you have 13 entries to find over the next week. Remember to send all categories to Pauwl, except for his category which will get sent to me. Here again is the format for each entry:

We are aiming to have all entries in by end of day 25th. We should allow a few days for Pauwl to disseminate, and then reveals can start as people are ready. I will create a separate thread for the reveals.

Category: A cover where the performing artist is of a different biological sex than the original artist. In case of a band, consider the lead singer. In case the song has a featured artist, it is the main artist who counts.
Musical tastes: Very eclectic, but I tend to like music in my vocal range that I can sing along to. My favorite artist is Billy Joel. My favorite genre is 90ās non-grunge alternative, but I occasionally listen to songs recorded in the 1930s and I occasionally listen to current Top 40 radio.
Any other judging notes: I wonāt penalize anyone for a song I am very familiar with because I used to be a rabid collector of covers, but non-hits will win a tiebreaker. I prefer it when the cover artist puts their own spin on it instead of a note-for-note recreation.

Category: A song you like because of the drumming and / or where the drumming stands out to you.
Musical tastes: I play the drums and I like the drums. More generally, as before, folk, jazz, improv, noise, bleeps/bloops, all sorts. Iāll give anything a listen once. I used to listen to loads of weirder indie stuff, but hardly ever do now. I love some classic rock/metal/pop, but am very ignorant about lots of that thanks to a youth spent as a music snob.
Any other judging notes: Doesnāt have to be an alive person drumming contemporaneously with the other things. A decent bit of programming or sampling is fine. Could be a 15 minute drum solo, I watch that stuff for fun. Could be someone banging out a bit of 4/4 to perfection. Hell, you donāt even have to like the drums, just tell me you do, Iāll be judging the song in toto anyway.

Category: A song with a great guitar riff, intro, or solo
Musical tastes: Rap, metal, punk, hardcore, alt country, beep boops, anything experimental, anything awesome or depressing or upbeat. No autotune or top 40ās please!
Any other judging notes: We all know guitars are the best instrument. Give me some finger picking, face shredding, or a sick riff. Try to pick something I might not have heard before.

Category: A love song. Or song about love/relationships. I would prefer positive songs rather than lost love or unrequited love.
Musical tastes: Current music is mostly indie or what falls under that general umbrella. I despise most popular music of the 90ās. Post MP3s, I havenāt really followed pop music. Early 80ās and back, is wide open. Tons of cool stuff to discover.
Any other judging notes: Overly familiar songs will be punished. I donāt want over the top torch songs. If youāre thinking Whitney Houston, think again. Please, no cheese.

Category: A song that is mostly about, invokes or heavily references a specific place. It doesnāt have to be happy or exotic, just interesting.
Musical tastes: Anything but screamy metal. Modern country-pop is probably gonna rank low, as well, but I highly doubt anyone would submit that anyway.
Any other judging notes: Since most of us are prisoners right now, letās travel via music! Note: When I travel, I like to get real. Sure, Iāll see the touristy stuff, but I also want to get to know the real people and food and soul of a place, even if itās not all good. Take that for what you will.

Category: A 2017-2020 political song appropriate for the times we live in.
Musical tastes: Mostly modern rock (anything from folk to metal) and catchy pop. But it doesnāt have to be that. Alt-hip hop act Rizzle Kicks won my last category. The only genre that is a likely loser right out of the gate would be country.
Any other judging notes: Iām basically looking for the next generation Rage Against The Machine. It doesnāt have to be the same style of music as them, but I want the anger and/or the message to be clear.

Category: A song from a movie or TV show.
Musical tastes Iāve made a reputation for myself (at least in my head) for liking popular music but I wouldnāt say thatās exactly accurate. I listen to some popular stuff but like a lot of alternative/indie rock, some hip hop, and just generally like being exposed to different genres of music although I definitely lean more towards ārockā these days.
Any other judging notes For this category I really donāt want songs that were commercial hits. They can be from popular pieces of work but I will dock points if I would be expected to already be familiar with the song. Iāve immensely enjoyed the soundtracks of several movies released over the past few years but I wonāt say which because people might pick them. Also they do not have to be in English; I donāt watch anime but I do sometimes like songs from it. Please identify the source of the song for my category (specific movie or TV show in addition to artist and song name).

Category: A song that was released in 2020. I donāt listen to enough new music. I hope you young hip individuals can introduce me to music in the year of the pandemic
Any other judging notes: I wonāt specifically penalize highly known songs but tbh i donāt know many songs released this year to begin with
edit because never being understood is very depressing - I donāt actually care what genre you send. I donāt like Metal or Prog Rock as much, but that doesnāt mean you canāt send it

Category: A song with a scream. To expand, in a lot of punk hardcore you might say the singer is screaming every word. So that counts. But also, one long or short scream in the song counts. Iām not judging based on the scream itself.
Musical tastes: I generally lean more towards things on the faster/heavier side within the following genres: Rock/Punk/Metal/EDM/Rap. Anything from 90ās onwards is probably going to have a better chance a high ranking.
Any other judging notes: If itās overly familiar, there will be a penalty. Try and keep it under 8 minutes, and if I am liking a 3 minute song and an 8 minute song a comparable amount then I am going to rank the 3 minute song higher.

Really, even if there is just a 3 second scream in the song somewhere that has an impact, its going to work for the category.

Musical tastes: Likes - pop in all its glorious forms - and my definition of pop is very wide. I do like a good tune obscured by noise. Dislikes - Jazz, Folk, Hard Rock, Metal apart from the bits of these I arbitrarily decide to like

Category: a song with a yeah!! or many yeahs! in it. āohhsā and various other non-language vocalizations that are distinct from a scream will also work.

Category: A song from a video game soundtrack. This opens up a lot more possibilities, as there is some mainstream music that may end up on a game soundtrack. So long as it has had a release on a game soundtrack at some point, it is fair game.
Musical tastes: Iāve been falling asleep nightly to the Crosscode soundtrack and I love it so much. Its not played by a symphony, so it wouldnāt count (and I wouldnt want you to submit it anyway) but for some inspiration - CrossCode (Original Game Soundtrack) - Album by Deniz Akbulut | Spotify
Any other judging notes: Iām pretty open to anything here. It doesnāt need to be obscure. Iāve listened to a lot of video game soundtracks over the years, and while I am going to lean more slightly towards music that is made specifically for a game than previously created music just being used in a soundtrack, your options are open.

Category: Delusions of Grandeur. Songs that feature an orchestra, are symphonic in scale (not length), are bombastic or just have a big, elaborate production in the broadest sense.
I do not mean regular songs that are played (ācoveredā) by or with an orchestra and having an orchestra is not necessary at all. The most important criteria is still if I like the song.
Musical tastes: I mainly listen to rock and metal (from vanilla to extreme) and their siblings, cousins and bastards. I also listen to pop, hip-hop, some classic, a tiny bit of opera and I can generally find something I like in most genres.
Basically no-hoper genres: hardcore techno/gabber, Operetta
Dubious genres: Electronic (although some electronic music did well in the previous categories I judged) , Jazz, country/western, disco, RNB
I listen to a lot of stuff, so just about everything else is in with a shot.

There are two rules that if broken will lead to a low score.
- The song should not annoy me.
- The song should not bore me.

Category: a haunting or hauntingly beautiful song; I donāt have an exact definition of this, so Iām open to what qualifies. Some songs that I think of are scalaās cover of creep, nancy Sinatraās bang bang from kill bill, mad world by Gary Jules and Amy Leeās listen to the rain.
Musical tastes: female over male singers; symphonic metal, alternative/hard rock, singer songwriter. I donāt usually like electronic/pop beats over the singing; prefer stripped down songs or just guitar/piano/drums/bass; for this category some ambiance or mood music is likely/expected, but it should be more behind the singer rather than on top of them.
Any other judging notes: Since this is open to interpretation, i will judge based on how I like the song much more than category fit. Of course, something like aquaās Barbie Girl is such a bad fit it would do horribly regardless of the song quality, so please do try to stick to the intention of the category.

I think I should add that having reflected, whilst I will be judging the song as a song, if I end up thinking the drums are forgettable or worse then that will inevitably bring it down. Thatās pretty much a general thing for me anyway.

Iād actually prefer spotify links. If somebody wants to include one in their submission for my category I will greatly appreciate it. Otherwise I will have to look for them myself and sometimes itās not clear if it is the correct version.

Because I am a foolish individual I left the category for Nicholasp27 out of the categories list. Especially unfortunate since I love the category he came up with.
Anyway, it is added to the post now, and the post has been edited to say that there are 14 total categories, so we each need to find 13 songs. If you copy/pasted from my post already please do update.

I thought I had most of my songs picked out but now I realize itās more like 5 and Iām kind of stressing about finding the rest.

Maybe people can check in if they think they will struggle for time during the weekend? If people feel like a bit more time would help maybe we could add some more on. Iād just rather make that call by the end of the weekend so others donāt push to submit on Monday or Tuesday and feel like they missed out on the extra time.
Would love to hear feedback on this. Obv we dont want to extend it forever, but for me picking the song is the most fun part so I personally donāt mind extending it a bit more than the 25th.
i wonder if some people would volunteer to do their categories sooner than others so people can focus on those submissions and then move on to others? Figuring out 5-6 songs might be more approachable than 13. Idk maybe Iām just being difficult but Iām having a much harder time with this than the standard walruses with five categories. I could also drop out if Iām just going to be whiny about it but Iām still interested in participating.
I donāt think you are being whiny. Itās a lot more songs to find than usual.
It might be a bit easier for Pauwl if all submissions are in at the same time, and I think if we stagger due dates for different categories it just gets a whole lot easier for the timeline to keep expanding. So I think its better to just keep one timeframe for all songs, but if need be extend the time we have to find them.
Would anyone object to me just extending now so that submissions are due end of day August 30th? Itās only the end of next week instead of early next week. Iād also like the extra time.

I think a little more time would be good, if people are ok with that then I am down. I am going to try to figure out some songs this weekend but my initial āresearchā has borne little fruit.
