No one is saying that and no one is sticking up for Columbus.
If you don’t think beard strokers are entitled to an opinion, then maybe don’t have one. Maybe nunnehi can come in and have one, but otherwise I don’t think there are any NA here.
It’s not necessarily the same as the Northern Irish. Northern Ireland is full of Irish people.
75 years ago the Polish took the property from some of my cousins and murdered them. 3 million of them. They still have not returned property to heirs or compensated them at all. I’m not sure how I’d feel about them renaming businesses and neighborhoods with Jewish names and not really giving anything back.
I’m all for renaming whatever - America sucks - Columbus sucks. If NA groups want to rename everything that’s great, but the implication that anyone itt speculating or having some theory about this is some neck beard anti-sjw jackass is messed up.
That’s fine when the aim is merely to stop people insulting marginalised people, i.e. the policing of language is the end in itself. I get animated about this sort of thing myself occasionally (eg the discussions where people have used “whore” as a pejorative about Melania and others). If you were to contend that stopping people saying “faggot” and “gay” as insults was a causative agent in progress on gay rights more broadly - as opposed to a symptom of it, or just one facet of a broader process - I would definitely disagree.
What I’m pushing back against is this idea that renaming places is some kind of substitute for restitution. The implication is liberals want to avoid doing anything real and renaming places is a distraction and I don’t think that’s fair.
FTR I’m totally for Reparations and other things to right wrongs. OFC changing names doesn’t accomplish this, but is still symbolically important to me.
