Ukraine, Russia, and the West

I skimmed that yesterday and didn’t find anything super insightful. I was expecting more given the phd focus. But also I have a short attention span.

I am pretty sure the west will Marshal plan Ukraine if it survives this Putin invasion.

Putin’s only winning strategy seems to be to convince Zelensky his prepared to kill a million civilians.

it’s a head fake. they are going to try to storm kyiv one more time

Is this your personal take based on your read of the situation, and if so what factors drive it?

414-17. Only 15 Republicans and two Democrats voted against the bill

Omar and Bush are the dems

and look at those 15 republicans–all the worst ones on the list weird.

Easy vote for them since they know it won’t matter and the base won’t notice, but it will make Daddy Putin happy.

most observers are noticing at least some consolidation of forces around kyiv in anticipation of another attemp.

the big issue is that they haven’t gotten anything to trade at the negotiating table. so a peace agreement without gaining a city would feel pyrrhic.

also noone really wants farmland. they want a place into which a bunch of russians can be bussed and turned into a fully russian colony. displacing ukrainians as refugees is also intentional for this purpose. not to belabor the comparison, but stalin did that to many ethnic minorities

This feels like it’s getting into semantic silliness.

Putin: Fly the planes from a NATO airstrip to a UKR airstrip? I will nuke you. Find a way to tow the planes over the border? Ok. That is acceptable.

There’s a lot of stuff in international relations that will strike a results-oriented person as lawbro-y semantics.

Sure - but if we’re really worried about Putin attacking or not, there’s no one there to hold him to the law over nit-picky details. I guarantee he’s not worried about nit-picky details over bombing hospitals.

This guy gives great updates. I hope he’s not just pulling shit out of his ass. He has been linked by blue checkmarks and I haven’t seen anyone rip him in the comments for not knowing what he’s talking about (which usually tends to happen when that is the case).

Good discussion with former Ukraine and Russian ambassador particularly regarding Russian understanding of Ukraine.

I have absolutely no clue about this, but would camera guy really be this close if there was a legitimate chance they’d blow up?

Stupid question: if USA #1 produces more oil than it consumes, why are we beholden to the global price?

Because the oil companies would ship it elsewhere lol. The most important rule is that the oil companies never make less money than they potentially could.

Well, I admitted it was a stupid question up front.
