I made a comment about this earlier in the thread, I think it is a cultural thing where they’ve kept the memory of Russian subjugation of their people alive and vibrant in their national story. They know the cost of acquiescence now is brutality and death later. Its a pretty stark contrast with, say, the American belief that nothing bad can really happen, that talk of American fascism is an exaggeration to laugh at. Ukrainians don’t laugh at the threat of Russian rule.

Ukrainians have a culture of extreme distrust and hatred of the Russians. Russia has long had a “Ukraine” problem and has throughout history committed many atrocities including mass genocide against Ukraine. They also live next to them and know their enemy’s weaknesses to some degree.

Hard to say, but if China were invading you may not see as many civilians take up arms.

So, let’s see, the KGB guy who:

  • Is suspected of blowing up civilian buildings in a false flag operation in order to get elected president

  • Had the the constitution changed to stay in power and become an autocrat

  • Suppresses dissent and criticism of his administration and restricts the free press

  • Has protesters arrested

  • Has journalists assassinated

  • Has political opponents poisoned

Is now waging wars of aggression? Well, this is a shocking fucking development. As always the right wing apologists have been shown to be stupid, evil, or both.

My GF is polish and for the years we have been together she has the vilest words for Russia and Putin.

They haven’t forgotten being enslaved by Russia after WW2 and will fight to the death for their land.

Wouldn’t it be better to point them in the wrong direction instead?

My stepmother was Polish (she died of covid) and also had the same vilest words toward Russians, all Russian people, not just the government. I didn’t know how much true hatred was there as she also had vile words for all German people, black people, Spanish people, well you get the idea.

This is a huge dose of hopium for me. Shoot it into my veins.

Wait so it’s wrong to root for Ukraine and express the opinion that NATO/EU nations should provide support in the form of weapons/supplies and if it comes to it, direct defense?

The idea that Russia could run out of money within days seems wild. Somewhere upthread there was a link about how Russia decoupled their economy from the West and accumulated budget surpluses of 640 billion.
That all of Russia even when preparing for an invasion only has a week’s supply of rockets strains credibility as well.

There is a lot of propaganda coming from both sides.

Depends on who you ask.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking these last few days that if Ukraine is successful at repelling the invasion, Trump and MAGA world will 100% be taking credit. “We sent them tanks, not pillows”, etc.

At least Trump is on the record calling the invasion a genius move by Putin. I know they can just pretend he never said that when speaking to their base but it doesn’t work with independents when Democrats are in the room.

AFAIK Turkey hasn’t agreed yet

Apparently the information comes from a known Facebook conspiracy theorist so I’d say it didn’t happen
