Ukraine Invasion 2: no more Black Sea fleet for you

Russia has barred 398 US reps and 87 senators, they will no longer be able to enter russia, even in diplomatic capacity, and maybe a few other things.

question is, who are the ones it didn’t sanction?

UA telegrams are reporting:

  • train of heavy artillery going through germany.
  • warship “Moscow” in the black sea may be hit with a rocket.
  • UA marines broke through an encirclement and joined with Azov. i think these are two regimens who were encircled separately from each other, now encircled together. some of the marines may have been captured.
  • the $800m US aid for UA includes 200 armored vehicles, 11 helicopters Mi-11, 18 long-range howitzers, as well as hundreds more javelins and switchblades.

RU telegrams are reporting:

  • volunteers have gotten consumer drones and other helpful aid for DNR/LNR, but russian customs are blocking the aid from going to Donetsk. :man_facepalming:
  • they are also posting pictures of written statements of refuseniks to serve in DNR army, with an official stamp saying “This person is suspected of treason, lies, and fraud.” :woman_facepalming:
  • they claim a 1000 marines surrendered in mariupol. that number is just completely unbelievable. other russian sources claim 72 marines were killed, and 42 captured. possibly a hundred or so made it to Azov.

If that’s the case then you can’t dismiss the Pinker hypothesis so easily.

Vandalism & Strike by a Neptune Anti-Ship Missile[edit]

A Ukrainian volunteer connected to the military by the name of Serg Marco wrote on Facebook that a Russian military vessel “Moskva” was struck by a Neptune anti-ship missile. Unconfirmed as of now, he writes “the cruiser is on fire and there is a storm at sea.” Once this is confirmed the page should be updated to reflect it’s further particpation in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:600:967F:DA30:2C32:2C25:23F2:4AEF (talk) 19:42, 13 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There are claims on Twitter that this ship was struck by Neptune missiles, but I have not seen anything from a WP:RS-worthy news organization. 331dot (talk) 20:04, 13 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The BBC now has on their ongoing reporting here that the Ukrainians say they struck the ship with “rockets”. 331dot (talk) 20:20, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

A Russian cruiser which was famously defied by Ukrainian troops on a small island at the start of the war has been hit by Ukrainian rockets in the Black Sea, according to Ukrainian officials.

The Moskva, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, received “very serious damage”, Odesa regional governor Maksym Marchenko said.

“It has been confirmed that the missile cruiser Moskva today went exactly where it was sent by our border guards on Snake Island!” he said.

On the first day of the invasion, the small garrison refused calls from the ship for it to surrender, telling the ship to “go to hell”.

Earlier on Wednesday a fire was reported on the ship. Ukrainian presidential aide Oleksiy Arestovych said Russian rescuers were unable to reach the vessel.

He said the ship could have as many as 510 crew members on board.

Ha, that’s on the wiki page but I wasn’t sure if I could trust it.

It’s a big ship too. The US and Russia are the only countries that operate cruisers. It would also carry anti missile systems which apparently weren’t effective.

yeah, that was a bit surprising to me, big ships have gone out of style due to costs, and this one was basically converted into a gunpowder keg at sea. just look at all the guided missiles that got installed on it, and consider that it’s a soviet ship from the 70s.

a lot of our assumptions about warfare are being completely turned upside down in 2022

before anyone asks, that’s an old russian Novorossiysk flag it’s flying. yes, it looks like the confederate flag without the stars. this picture is from sometime in mid 2010s, when russia was trying hard to create a Novorossiya concept and justify taking more of ukrainian territory on the black sea.

Have you read the book? That’s not what it says.

We don’t know where this cruiser was but I wonder how the Ukrainians were able to locate and target it.

globalhawks and sentries are flying around romania, right?

A few more details from that BBC site.

The $800m worth of US weaponry pledged by President Biden on Wednesday to Ukraine includes artillery and radar systems that may require “additional training” for Ukrainian troops.

“The systems that will probably require some additional training for Ukrainian forces are the howitzers (and) … the counter artillery radar,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

The radar system, he said, is “not a very difficult system to operate, but it’s not one that they have in their inventory”.

Howitzers are a type of relatively short-barrelled cannon, used to lob shells into enemy lines.

According to the US Defense Department, the shipment will include 18 Howitzers along with 40,000 artillery rounds.

It will also include hundreds of missiles and Switchblade drones - also known as kamikaze drones due to the way they can be flown into their target.

The US is also sending 11 helicopters, hundreds of armoured vehicles, anti-personnel mines, body armour and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear protective equipment.

Idk, but I thought there were surveillance flights over the Black Sea. The Neptune cruise missile is supposed to have a range of about 300 km and it’s been tested near Odessa.

Maxar satellite is open source these days. There are members of the public with a monthly subscription tracking more than US intelligence (can’t find the BBC article now)

Since early last year, he and others among what’s known as the “open source intelligence community” have been closely watching Russian military activity in and around Ukraine.

Members of the public can purchase high-quality pictures gathered by satellite for as little as $10 (£7.60) per sq km.

The resolution of these images is sometimes very high, capturing tiny details measuring down to 30cm by 30cm at ground level. This granularity makes it possible to identify vehicles and road markings.

Some private companies are also sharing sophisticated images captured from orbit - in near real-time - directly with the Ukrainian military. Canadian firm MDA is one such example.

Interesting. So that’s the source of the convoy images. No idea if “near real-time” would be good enough for this though. Maybe they could find it later by estimating heading and speed.
