The format works so well. This is what they should do for a new six-episode revival. Make it a tie-in with Nightcrawler by revealing it’s Jake Gyllenhaal behind the camera.
Scully: Together, they just look like a pattern, but it’s a coincidence. We only see more because we want to.
There are several times in X-Cops where Duchovny grins to the camera at the absurdity of the situation and I honestly can’t tell if that’s scripted or him breaking character. Either way works.
This girl refusing to show her hands is suspect
Mulder coming through with the clutch Alex Jones explanation.
What if…none of the clues fit together…because the monster never appears as the same thing twice?
I’m currently rewatching, so I am a little ahead, but “Jose Chung From Outer Space” is such an incredible episode of TV.
Season 1, Episode 16 - Young at Heart
The prison doctor makes one of Mulder’s old perps into a Benjamin Button.
Season 1, Episode 17 - E.B.E.
Mulder and Scully chase a truck carrying an alien across the country
We’re introduced to the Lone Gunmen here. I really liked the vibe of this episode - reminded me a bit of The Americans or something. The cat and mouse game of whether or not to trust Deep Throat is really fun.
Season 1, Episode 18 - Miracle Man
A Faith Healer boy who starts killing his congregants by accident
This is another one like the Amish alien episode where I thought the performances from the character actors were just awesome and really carried an episode with a meh plot.
Season 1, Episode 19 - Shapes
Native American werewolves
Season 1, Episode 20 - Darkness Falls
Little fireflies that kill you at night
When I was in 5th grade my classroom had a book shelf that you could borrow books from to read during breaks or if you finished your work early or whatever. There was apparently an X-Files book series produced for the YA audience, and I distinctly remember reading the book version of this episode. Like, a strangely vivid memory of it - probably moreso than any of the books we read for class. When I started watching the show I wondered whether it would be an actual episode or if the book was a standalone story.
I don’t understand how the guy at the end gets out of the jeep to fix the flat tires and is devoured by the bugs while he’s standing in the jeep’s headlights. Seems like he played by the bugs’ rules and still got eaten. I hope somebody got fired over that blunder.
And now I’m caught up. Next up is “Tooms” - are they bringing back stretch armstrong guy again already? If so, I’m in.
Great episode ahead!
Season 1, Episode 21 - Tooms
Tooms is back, gets sucked into escalator
Great guest spot from Vondas from The Wire as the sleazeball psychiatrist for hire that gets Tooms out of jail. They were right that this character needed some more screen time - he’s an excellent creep.
I’m still not sure why the FBI allows Mulder to be the X-Files guy tbh.
It’s been a while, but I am pretty sure that is explained at some point
Can’t imagine watching this show for the first time, and seeing episodes like The Erlenmeyer Flask or Duane Barry or Paper Clip and thinking wow I can’t wait to see how TV expert Chris Carter is going to make this into a huge narrative that makes sense and has a massively satisfactory payoff which is absolutely for sure on the horizon.
My impression was always that Mulder was kind of a fuck-up as an FBI agent so they gave him the X-Files assignment to keep him out of their hair. One of those situations where they can’t fire the guy so they give him some Mickey Mouse job in the basement. I assume Scully got sent there because she was a FNG who got stuck with a crappy assignment. That’s probably not the real reason, but I like my explanation.
Season 1, Episode 22 - Born Again
A moustache cop is reincarnated in the body of a young girl
Season 1, Episode 23 - Roland
A jet propulsion scientist’s frozen brain possesses his mentally handicapped twin brother
This was an entire episode involving multiple murders because some scientists were jealous over whose name got published in the journal.
Also man, lots of possession episodes this season.
When threatening to shut them down Scully talks about her and Mulder’s case closure rate and how high it is. He sure does get blindsided a lot though.
Currently watching the season finale, Ehrlenmeyer Flask. Our heroes know for a fact that the local police are hiding the car recovered from a crime scene, and Scully is still on her bullshit about how Mulder has gone TOO FAR and how this is all CRAZY.
He has been right literally every time. You’ve gotta stop fighting that fight Dana.
Classic “research animals freak out while a guy gets murdered” scene. Love it.
I just watched Home again… I can’t believe this actually aired on cable tv (once).
lol, without even googling I’m pretty sure I know exactly which episode this was.
(after checking)
yup! I definitely remember watching this with a friend and both of us were like “Did that just happen?”
