Screw it, Iāma do it too, and Iām going to START with the prequels!
Haha, Iām fully on the newish bandwagon of appreciating them more in hindsight. If a quality edit of EP 2 ever hits internet archive, then my enjoyment could even go higher. Canāt fix the strange edits of all those early scenes in the film which feel really short and incoherent, but you could take out a decent amount of the anakin angst overkill.
For ROTS, I watched the 4+ hour edit, donāt remember the name of the mix, that combined it with animated Star Wars material. I did skip over the animated parts simply because I wanted to do a 1-6 rewatch with original footage in hd. Definitely going back to rewatch in full.
Harmyās untouched hd edits of 4-6 are amazing.
You know, watching the Phantom Menace, that film is completely soaked in beige. Jar Jar is actually fine in that one, itās how muted everything else is that results in his presence being a bit loud, imo.
But back to the beige. It really blockchained in my mind to Villenueveās Dune. Similar color schemes and the first part of a trilogy. I found irony in the fact that the prequels were partially judged harshly because of the expectations and people absorbing all the social narratives into their own opinion. Yet, I havenāt seen a serious film watcher itf admit that Dune was not a good film.
Technicially proficient, sure. But did you really care about any of the characters? Note: I am a non reader. It really felt like Villenueve didnāt want to take any risks. Didnāt feel stylish at all which I love his highly stylized takes on classic stories i.e. Prisoners and Arrival.
ETA: The Anakin race scene is better than anything in Dune. Holding out hope that the sequels will somehow validate how dry and emotionless that film was.
I highly recommend watching Harmyās despecialized OG theater versions of 4-6 on internet archive.
I got em
Finally watched Solo and the Kenobi Patterson edit and both were very good. That Flea cameo was an eyesore.
Solo was an absolute banger. Ron Howard massive movement in the power rankings after abolutely soul crushing Rian Johnson. Soloās vibe is probably the closest match to Bebop that Iāve seen.
Is the 1899 hate coming from fans of Dark? And if so did you watch the full series at once or were you stuck waiting for new seasons? I canāt imagine feeling 1899 was going any differently than the first season of Dark. Only difference is waiting years to find out if Dark would wrap up with a satisfying ending cause this time I have more trust in the showrunners.
Biggest fail was Netflix even offering dubs much less enabling them by default.
Dune is spectacular and I love all the characters how dare you
You know what I remember? I mean obv opinions soured, particularly once we had Episode II and Georgeās attempt at a category romance.
But Timothy Zahn did a lot to resurrect immense enthusiasm for the franchise.
Return of the Jedi came out in 1983. Since then, Lucas had ascended to a level of storytelling godhood. Heād been attached through LucasFilm and LucasArts to countless classic movies and video games, least of all the Indiana Jones franchise.
Then he re-released the original trilogy theatrically --with a few stupid tweaks but overall INCREDIBLE polishes that would only be ruined by his further revisions and re-re-re-re-releases.
Motherofgod.gif when we learned after years of stupid rumors we believed every time --George Lucas was actually working on a new Star Wars movie.
And then when the trailer for Phantom Menace dropped with select movies (Meet Joe Black, The Waterboy, The Siege, and A Bugās Life), holy wan kenobi!!!
This was in the days before YouTube, so people would literally buy tickets to another movie with the trailer attached, watch the trailer, and leave. Some people say itās only the only reason Meet Joe Black showed a profit.
Then the movie itself blew everyoneās minds. It was everything we DIDNāT know we wanted. Sequels were going to continue to show a worn out, extremely USED galaxy far far away.
The Phantom Menace showed us a bygone era when the Jedi were revered and spaceships were as shiny as Mad Max chrome.
Oh, and we FINALLY got to see action scenes with fully trained Jedi. Not just Luke rediscovering the ways of the Force, but weird wtf I didnāt even know they could do that but I guess it makes sense kinda shit.
Thenā¦yeah. Episode II nearly killed the franchise. Iād argue every other Lucas film really isnāt that bad. Itās just that Attack of the Clones is a cinematic catastrophe.
Rest assured, I did not want to feel that way. Was on a perfect run watching his films though I donāt think I can watch the one about the mass shooting.
As devilās advocate, Iād argue Dune is deliberately an emotional void. Itās part of the storytelling experience and a large part of why visual auteurs like Lynch, Jodorowsky, and Denis were tapped to make those experiences compelling for wider audiences.
It is a triumph of storytelling --but may not be to your taste.
Iām hoping it was a mood thing and next watch will be completely different. The SW prequels, even ep2, were more palatable in a straight 1-6 rewatch and enhanced my enjoyment of the og trilogy. Maybe that happens with Dune also.
Not agreeing with you and BJ is making me sad. Iām just assuming youāve read the book. Do you think that is relevant at all?
counterpoint:
I did not finish the book and did not enjoy any incarnation of the movies or TV shows.
Iām also putting it in context as a work of art.
I generally donāt enjoy hard sci-fi and epic fantasy for the same reasons. Theyāre too cerebral for me. I like a splash of intellectual vigor, not the whole bottle.
Please give me another chance but I am not on the Momoa train.
i think iāve literally only seen him in s1 of game of thrones and dune, so to me heās like a genius
