The Supreme Court: RIP Literally Everything

That’s nice. Women are getting punched in the face for the liberal men’s sins of complacency.

Where do you think the median is?

In the 32% group not the 29% group. Not because 32>29, but because 25+32=57 so that group encompasses the median whereas counting from the bottom 14+29=43 doesn’t reach 50.

About 55% of Utah is LDS. That leaves a big chunk that is not. And Salt Lake City is somewhat different than the state overall anyway. The Mayor is at least somewhat progressive.

The Church has not favored or opposed legislative proposals or public demonstrations concerning abortion.

They haven’t publicly favored or opposed these things.

What % of Catholics use birth control?

No idea but in my anecdotal research there are many more people who claim to be catholic but don’t follow any of most of the rules. That is super rare for mormons. You are either all in or all out of lds.

I was thinking more about the second chart since he used “median” in that context.

It’s long been an annoyance to me that there isn’t much reporting on the restrictions that get majority support. Those are generally non-medical reasons such as gender selection of a child or not being able to afford a child. Reporting is definitely biased to make it seem like a choice between allowing no abortions except maybe in cases of rape or incest or allowing all abortions except maybe for unspecified cases which people are led to believe are symmetrical to rape/incest. I don’t know whether that bias is an attempt to make support for abortion look greater than it actually is in an attempt to pick a winner or if the media has a bias towards narratives that present binary choices instead of being more nuanced.

Which group are progressives more like? I am asking sincerely. It’s not like I take enjoyment out of making these posts.

My personal experience is that I’ve met quite a few Jack Mormons.

Being “culturally Catholic” is a big thing. Many of them atheist.

It’s not exactly like non-religious Jewish people, but maybe the closest thing to it

Take Jack Kerouac. Every time someone would ask him if he was Beat, he’d just answer, “I’m a Catholic.”

Yeah, that phrase popped into my head too. There’s diversity and disagreement and dissent that’s hard for outsiders (and I count myself) to see.

Uhhh yea. We’re going to go to advocating for states’ rights to advocating for a federal ban in approximately 2 weeks.

I always get amused when the person who posted this

loses all ability for nuance when religion is involved.

I don’t care about changing their minds. Fuck them… They need to stop imposing their stupid batshit crazy religious bullshit onto everyone else

They were on the 2020 ballot, too, and look what we got.

Religion is as close as you can get to something that is purely bad. The few good things are found outside religion in better social context.

That said I have no intention of getting into a metaphysical debate.

My anecdotal research is a large family of Catholics who were obsessed with taking care of their children.

My 67 year old mom is now helping raise my nephew. After a life devoted to taking care of others including teaching special needs kids, she is stepping in to help a daughter in law with BPD in a house that also includes my dad who is in the last years of pancreatic cancer recovery.

When I see that devotion and hear people speak of having children as a hindrance (often dressed up as climate awareness), It’s pretty clear to me that there is some merit in the way she lives.

When people say “none of them actually care,” I know it’s bullshit.

So even if they can’t get a federal ban done, is there anything stopping the GOP from doing something like withholding federal $$ from abortion-legal states the next time they’re in power? I’m not even sure what level of control they’d need for this, definitely wouldn’t need to be a filibuster-proof trifecta or anything.

You misunderstand me.

I’m saying she would act the same if she was not religious. It’s an error assuming she is loving and kind because she is religious. The religion is incidental. Tons of people love similar lives who are not religious.

It is, but most humans are hardwired to need it. Our lives and our ancestors lives disappearing into the void when we die is too much to bear.

And it’s not like officially atheistic societies (USSR, modern China) have anything but a terrible track record.

Contained religion (Scandinavia) seems to be the best chance of success for a culture.
