The Supreme Court: RIP Literally Everything

Oh, I agree. But let’s say they did? Is there anything they could do that at least 5 SCOTUS Justices would sign off on and would stick.

I doubt it. Wasn’t it just up thread about how SCOTUS is acting as the backstop that lets looney right congresscritters and state legislators pass stupid shit without consequence (because they stop it) while still being far right?

It would take legislation to expressly make abortion illegal at the federal level. I don’t think there’s any mental gymnastics that could allow SCOTUS to do anything further than return to the old status quo of “none of our business, you states do what y’all want”.

No. No SC Justice supports anything along the lines of the idea that an unborn fetus is REQUIRED to be protected.

The argument is, and always has been, the extent to which it is permissible for a legislative body to expressly PROTECT the rights of an unborn fetus.

Thanks for the explanations, everyone.

Still no idea what’s going to happen with this case. It’s absolutely bonkers.

This is really worth the read to see how the law was created so that there’s no one who can be sued. The article analogizes it to New York essentially banning guns by saying they’re illegal to possess, but the law can only be enforced by private citizens. Because no state actor is enforcing the law, there’s no one to sue. Thus there’s no lawsuit for the court to hear, and therefore no mechanism for the court to declare the law unconstitutional. Checkmate.

Another edit:
Apparently a lower court has just issued a stay?

But others are saying this ruling is being misinterpreted?

Damn, they killed off abortion (at least in TX) even quicker than I thought they would. Smart politics by them honestly, bury it with the Afghanistan bullshit and then when they get around to killing it for the rest of the country around the end of June next year the propaganda machine can spin up “well there’s this much more restrictive law in TX and everything’s fine!”. JR is undoubtedly one of the best politicians on the team fascist and they hate him lol.

Got a law bro blaming the people that didn’t vote for Clinton for this. Says Dems can’t force a Justice to retire. I am shaking with anger. Fuck them all so much.

Lot of online commentators worried about Afghan women are oddly quiet about women in Texas today.

If the Texas abortion law doesn’t spur Democratic turnout in the next election cycle, maybe abortion is overrated as a campaign issue and should be de-emphasized.

A ton of people who might have been motivated to vote over this will be denied the right to.

Outrage drives people to the polls. Therefore, we need to ramp up a left-wing culture of outrage even more to overcome voter suppression. We need Republicans to act even worse because, somehow, what they’ve already been doing hasn’t been enough.

Oh good, more accelerationism will solve this for sure.

That has a better chance of success than betting on the Supreme Court to save us.
