The Supreme Court: Playing Calvinball and going on free trips since 1789

We know now, just probabilistically. More time will give us more clarity on whether, for once, we’re going to get lucky or if everything comes down as expected.

they’re popularish, sure. But they can’t put a durable majority together and they’re dependent on the electoral college and the senate bias towards small-population states, both of which are thin advantages. The senate advantage in particular can easily be knocked out of whack if Puerto Rico and DC are admitted. They’ve got a rickety coalition of nazis, fundies, and billionaires, and they can’t expand their tent without losing a sizable chunk of the deplorables they already have.

time plus clarity minus lucky equals as expected

t + c - l = as

If this really wakes up enough Democrats to the urgent necessity of playing hardball, then it’s absolutely worth the seat.

Many of these guys are desperate to believe in a fantasy world where doing The Right Thing is rewarded and the good guys somehow win out in the end. Hell, I want to believe that too. The intentions are good, but holy hell it’s been a destructive idea to cling onto.

The hypocrisy is so clear cut here that I think it finally forces some of these guys to face the ugly truth that norms are dead and that Republicans are soulless ghouls who will do anything to amass power.

I’m not sure if enough Democrats will go for court packing et al right away (assuming they even win). But nothing good is going to happen until more Democrats come to this realization anyway. So, yeah, I don’t know, maybe this ends up not being such a bad thing.

Counter point: we have to win litigious elections with Trumpy court circuits and a SCOTUS that will at BEST hang 4-4.

Well, they do control 2/3 of the federal government and 50% more state legislatures than the Dems, and are about to have 2:1 control over the Supreme Court, so yah I’d say that’s popularish.

And they are fairly likely to get an impeached grifting reality TV rapist re-elected so I’m not sure this is some sputtering antiquated ideology at play.

Everyone loses in a race to the bottom which is the direction of this country since Trump got elected.

A 6-3 Supreme Court will be ideologicaly inconsistent with the makeup of this country. Its almost exactly inverse. Journalist and dem politicians need to hammer this home and every time the court comes down with a ruling that takes us back 50 years then we need to protest. Just surround the court and draw attention to every crap ruling until they feel the pressure. Make this country an uncomfortable place for their friends and family members and don’t let up. Keep working cases through the court, keep the pressure on. If the court refuses to hear important cases, protest, when terrible rulings come down, protest.

If we resort to the lowest common denominator then America will no longer be the country we once were.

Yes the Republicans have no integrity, they don’t play by the rules. But if we try to play that game then its USA goodbye.

Edit

I am trying to be an optimist here.

You keep using that word dot jpg

Based on his reaction to the current protests, this is exactly what he wants. The more strategic people around him will see the opportunity to take over local governments Trump keeps talking about.

Arresting Obama is going to be a step toward fascism. Beating down the protestors and declaring some BS martial law situation in Chicago will be the next ones.

Yea people don’t realize how bad a 6-3 court is. If Trump is reelected, there’s a solid chance SS, Medicare, ACA, gay marriage, and abortion are gone in the next 2-3 years. Even the most brain dead deplorable is going to realize the country is fucked.

The ACA is most likely already done. It will take Gorsuch or Kavanaugh to save it this winter.

No they’ll slap together some dogshit without a mandate and the GOP will call them Marxists anyway.

While that may have been true things have changed, Jerry fucking Nadler is pushing for packing the courts if Mitch pushes someone through before inauguration. I think the majority of dems will be on board after this, but we’d need everyone on the senate, and the win the senate in a rigged election, so still a long shot.

What happens with the secret service that is assigned to Obama? Do they protect him from being arrested or join in the arrest?

Yea. Because right now it’s all about upsetting the libs. That shit is gonna change real quick once they find out they ain’t getting a social security check every month. They are fine with putting others down but if all that stuff goes away, every single American that doesn’t have a nest egg is fucked.

This has been my argument. There is a point where enough faces get eaten that people start killing the leopards.

yes, i was being highly immature and saying subtly what I have been wanting to scream from the rooftops for the past 24 hours but haven’t because it is ultimately unproductive, no matter how badly I want to say it.

However, I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see Pete talking about this everywhere over the next few weeks…like he was in Feb 2019…
