The Sumo Thread

Would really like to see Takayasu take home the yusho.

Yep, they show on cable beginning with the Makushita matches, and then switch over to the regular NHK channel from 4-6 each day for the Makuuchi action.

Hard to imagine 2 full hours of sumo a day on the main NHK channel. Must be a lot of sumo fans over there in Japan.

It’s the national sport and there just isn’t a lot going on here most of the time. It’s an easy way to fill up the programming schedule.

The popularity of sumo here rises and falls. It was at its height during the Waka/Taka boom, then fell off when the Mongolians were dominating the sport and there was also a match-fixing scandal.

Right now it’s enjoying a fresh boom in popularity, evidenced by the fact that before covid the entire basho typically sold out within minutes of tickets becoming available.

And there are plenty of people like me who watch the entire two hours every day without fail.

Takayasu doing his best to make this basho an exciting final-day finish.

Takayasu has officially shit his mawashi.

100% accurate prediction if you ignore the bit about Hakuho. Exciting tournament, and the juryo division was equally as dramatic to watch.

Yikes.

jesus christ, apparently he went limp on the clay, they just let him lay there face down for … several minutes??? and then just lugged him off without proper neck immobilization/backboard use etc??? what the fuck???

Unfortunately, from long ago the NSK has been famously ill-prepared to deal with serious ringside injuries.

Another recent one was Kizakiumi’s fall from the dohyo resulting in a serious neck injury that caused him to retire in his prime. He’s since dropped 100 pounds and become a Youtuber.

It’s actually amazing that more serious injuries don’t occur. Usually they just cart the fallen rikishi off in the ever-present giant wheelchair.

Mitakeumi yusho?

Tomorrow your horse and mine face off in a head-to-head battle of the 4-1 Filipinos. The winner will have the opportunity to finish runner-up to Terunofuji.

Yeah Asanoyama is screwed. Even if he escapes with the same suspension that Abi got he’ll tumble down to Juryo, but as an Ozeki, he’s held to a higher standard, and lying to his superiors is a huge no-no in sumo land.

Ryuden is also in hot water for visiting and knocking up his mistress.

Apparently Asanoyama has/had a voracious appetite for cabaret club hostess fruit pies.

In normal times no one would have blinked, as he’s hardly the first or only rikishi with such tastes.

But with COVID restrictions in place and lying to his elders on top of his ill-advised excursions, his career is toast.

Best case scenario, he’s suspended and has to work his way back from Juryo, if his pride and shame would even allow it.

Worst and most likely case is intai and Japan’s next great hope for a native Yokozuna flushed down the toilet.
