postseason analysis of the sales and whether or not they were a “success” is popular among the news outlets. this year’s numbers are pretty good by all accounts but this piece by NYT makes it still seem like everything is still in the crapper

the spring sales at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips delivered $1.4 billion, on estimates ranging from $1.3 billion to $1.8 billion. That’s a 22 percent decrease from total earnings of $1.8 billion in 2023 — a respectable finish, according to market experts, given the financial challenges of this season.

That’s the painting? Lol, as the kids would say

an unnamed buyer from Barcelona entered into a bidding war on the auction website Todocolección. Originally listed for just €1 ($1), he won the work for €926 ($1,000). At the time, this must have seemed like a windfall to the previous owner, from Sabadell in Catalonia, who had inherited the painting. Though it bore the signature “Degàs,” he didn’t believe it could be genuine

Wasn’t sure if I should put this here or the meme thread

I also saw this at the same museum. A lot of butterflies gave their lives for fashion.

Sacrifice is necessary for the Met’s Costume Institute, I guess.

finally got a chance to visit the Alicia Keys - Swizz Beatz collection at the Brooklyn Museum yesterday

the show is a showcase of contemporary black artists. the work was great

if there is a critique to be had, it’s the amount of space in the show dedicated to the “great work” of Keys and SB in their role as patrons. the work displayed in the show is their personal collection, and there is a bit of a debate about the ethics of museums putting on shows by patrons (link should open in incognito if it’s blocked).

this is further complicated by SB’s relationship with Malaysian businessman, Jho Low who was accused of embezzling billions. art is loaded with all the intrigue.

douche

the general director of the Sarasota Opera on Florida’s Gulf Coast, had expected his nonprofit organization to receive a state grant of about $70,000 once Mr. DeSantis signed a budget that state lawmakers had approved in March.

But in a move that stunned arts and culture organizations, Mr. DeSantis vetoed the entirety of their grant funding — about $32 million — on June 12, leaving them scrambling to figure out how to offset the shortfall.

Leaders of arts organizations in Florida, many of whom have worked in the state for decades, cannot remember a governor ever eliminating all of their grant funding. Even in the lean years of the Great Recession, at least a nominal amount — say, 5 percent of the recommended total — was approved.

That second painting is so beautiful

still a douche

DeSantis said the cause was Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival, which he characterized as being overtly “sexual” and therefore an inappropriate recipient of state funds.

While it’s unclear if the Orlando festival was slated to receive any money from the grants, the state of Florida awards money for cultural projects based on a ranked list. The Fringe Festival was ranked toward the bottom.

choose wisely, kids

… according to data analyzed by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (NYFED) for the first quarter of 2024. The NYFED also revealed that more than half of art history and arts majors are “underemployed,” meaning that they are working in fields that don’t require a college degree.

the link they pulled the info from. didn’t know the NY Fed Reserve was a source for this kind of info

Went to The Getty Center in LA today for the first time in ages. The complex and setting is just spectacular with absolutely beautiful gardens.

The art is fine, I guess. Not really my cup of tea, mostly old-master style paintings from the 1400’s-1700’s. There was a cool exhibit of illuminated books from around 1400. They look cool now, back then they were probably melting faces. Fortunately at the end of walking through all of that they pay you off with some Monets and a badass Van Gogh.

I will probably go back with my wife for brunch, a visit to the gardens, and see the Van Gogh, and skip the rest.

I’ve worked several jobs that required a degree and my BM was perfectly acceptable to meet the requirements. It has kept me regularly employed through thick and thin.

BM?

That Van Gogh is a heavy hitter, I would have assumed it was housed in Europe

This story doesn’t say what they bought it for in 1990 but for some reason I think I heard $75M. Wonder if it would get half a billy today.
