Polyphia is one of my favorite bands and Vai is one of my all time favorite guitarists, so this new song / music vid from a few days ago was a treat.
he’s making the rounds. its good to see. vai just performed recently with Living Colour at a festival sud americano. and they then redid Cult of Personality with him.
that horn at the end
still curious how far they can ‘push’ that slappy bass technique and that mostly staccato vibe throughout most of their stuff that ive heard.

The part that’s crazy and what he’s known for is the sweeping in the solo that starts to pick up around 3:30. This song starts off a bit slow so if people are watching this, they need to at least see that part (the whole section that Youtube says is most replayed). I’m not familiar with this solo but I assume it’s mostly just improvised. That’s insane because he’s doing full rake sweeps over these oddball fusion changes. A lot of my practice now is just playing over fusion backing tracks, and if you get lost you’re toast.
Yeah to me it’s not better or worse, just different. It’s basically the answer to “What would guitar music sound like if it was stylistically similar to modern pop / electronic music from 2010 onward?” Very few people have even attempted to do that, so I give them a lot of credit for it even if it’s not my favorite style. I mean guitar is “dead” and lame (not really, guitar sales are way up and I think I’ve read that more people are playing than ever before, but it’s all but gone from modern popular music) so anything that puts a new angle on it to make it relevant again will rate highly with me.
That throne at 2:00 is ridiculous. I need to trade in my guitar stool for a gothic guitar throne.
I always sing this at karaoke.
Don’t be so circumscribed!
Can’t even put into words the memories that album brings back
I haven’t heard tis in over 20 years!
