If the roles had been reversed the GOP would have been screaming bloody murder about it. They would have escalated. They would have riled up the base, damn the consequences. They would not have been restrained by any notions of fair play, tradition and decorum that the other side had zero intention of ever abiding by themselves. And they would have won.

I don’t know about stopping them, but they should have shut down congress and the senate. Every GOP presser should have been interrupted by Dems screaming in the GOP faces. In every single interview, every single Dem in both houses gave for a year, the answer should have been about the GOP stealing the seat. Every session of the senate should have been disrupted with chants of “Shame! Shame! Shame!”
And when none of that worked, Obama’s final remarks before the Senate went on recess in '15 should have been “The Senate has been invited to advise, and their silence will be taken as consent,” and he should have picked the leftiest communist socialist judge from Venezuela and made a recess appointment.
And when the GOP complained, every single Dem’s response should have been “Fuck you. Try that shit again.”
