Dumb Euro here. Am I right in saying that opening formal impeachment hearings would give some sort of additional legal clout to the demands for documents (tax returns, other Trump financial records, redacted stuff from Mueller report, actual testimony from Trump lackeys who’ve just replied “lolno” to everything thus far) or is the likely reality that they’ll just refuse to cooperate and nothing will ever happen?
Recent history has taught me to expect the latter…
Quick answer is yes… It gives them access to grand jury materials + witnesses in that it is expected the courts move out the way for impeachment/inquiry.
Courts go away, as they won’t get involved with the separation of powers once an official impeachment inquiry is launched. An impeachment inquiry is a catch all, and the obstruction will stop or people will probably start being held in criminal contempt.
I’m not sure that this is true. If not for Trump’s gaslighting, the playing field would be so different that they might have had to actually answer some tough questions. We live in a world where the electorate and the GOP have been hammered with, “NO COLLUSION NO OBSTRUCTION WITCH HUNT 68 ANGRY DEMOCRATS!!!”
That’s surely helped his cause in some ways. Now, if he had just shut up at the right time, then Barr and the GOP would have made it all go away… But it’s hard to get the parlay of rampant gaslighting AND knowing when to STFU.
That’s why I think the Dems are being methodical about it. It’s frustrating to us and it seems like they are clueless. But as slow as they are moving, they are crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s. But I see what you mean and yea, you probably are correct.
Everybody says it’s all some grand plan. tRUmp’s playing 3D chess, pelosi is masterfully waiting her time, the administration says racism is being weaponized strategically and politically. It’s all a bunch of hogwash, imo. He is an old racist tweeting out whatever he happens to be watching on fox news at the time, he’s an old man yelling at the clouds with no filter. He is essentially the president of the fox news fan club, mailing out his signature on paper printed of a tweet he liked from fellow club members.
The centrist Dems have never seen anything like it, the corruption, the lies, the constant deception and obstruction right out in the open. They are used to it happening behind close doors, like they do it. They are loathe to move on impeachment because the donors that fund their campaigns are making too much money from tax cuts and deregulation to let anything happen to their cash cow.

Why block the nomination when Hillary looked to be a shoe in to win the presidency unless you knew the election was being rigged.
