Who could have seen it coming?

Thanks, makes sense.
One general theme from your posts in this thread that I think I agree with is that because emotions are running super high right now theres a risk of the state doing something that will be destructive in the long run. I am also so frustrated that I want to see these Trumpers hammered with repercussions for their actions. But there’s a real chance that this all results in a sort ot Patriot Act 2.0 that will trample a ton of rights.
Its super frustrating because either you let them get away with murder or you throw the book at them and the other 70 million enthusiastic Nazis in America will make them martyrs to inspire more violence.
Well the two examples you gave dont make it in the top 50. People who paid lip service to trump though? Like Ted Cruz turns them out for sure plus a ton of others. Anybody who makes it in the top 5 of a presidential primary is turning them out imo. They just gotta hit the right notes. They dont need yo ves trump.
I assume some of what people are saying here is hyperbole, so I’m not holding people to everything literally. But, there is room between charging hundreds of people with sedition or murder and doing nothing. There is charging people with the crimes they committed including the person/people who killed the cop and the people with handcuffs who will probably be found to have not very secretly conspired to kidnap people.
I don’t really buy the motivating nazis thing. Spencer getting punched in public didn’t motivate anyone. It just made Spencer go away. I think not having any real consequences for their actions motivates them a lot more.
I think the punishment should be commensurate with what others are getting. You want to reform? Fine - wait until after these guys are prosecuted. But the level of punishment should not take into account that we might make them mad and create more McVeighs.
What? The turnout in ga was incredible. Dems barely won and that’s only because they nearly had 100% of general election turnout with hundreds of thousands of new voters and the promise of stimulus. Without heroic dem turnout and trump handing it to them via demanding stimulus plus epic failure by mitch dems massacred
Trying not to rile up your enemies has been the Democratic establishment political strategy for a while. It’s why Pelosi seems to be cooler on impeachment, getting dragged along to that goal instead of leading the charge.
Maybe we should create a situation where the conflict is much more in the open. Maybe we should care more about the pursuit of justice, even if it leads to more disorder caused by Trump supporters.
This, but not with sarcasm. A big fucking part of the problems with the USA stem back to bending over to appease the South post Civil War.
That is not what happened. He was basically done and hit a one-outer.
I 100% agree and have been telling people if I knew trump had stole the election I would approve of storming the Capitol and I might have been apart of it and we should have burned it down.
I mean lots of these people were legit crying over it. I think many of them literally think it was stolen and I agree we should be punishing those who lied to them mostly.
That said I’m still fine with locking these people up because they’re extremely dangerous and its impossible to convince them it wasnt stolen
What a glittering prize.
if pence is acting president via 25th, does he get pardon power? i can also see him pardoning some rioters on last day. probably not proud boys, but some police, and the like.
why does pardoning discredit trmpzm? corruption of public assets is the overarching umbrella over republicanism. minority rule means they have to break the system of checks and balances.
I don’t think the Dems strategy is about trying not to rile up enemies on the right. It’s about using the right to keep their enemies on the left in check.
You’ point was the new Trump voters were more likely to stick around than the new D voters. In the only data we have one this, in an election where Trump was not on the ballot but still central to the discussion, more R voters didn’t stick around.
Yes, turnout was historic for a runoff, but given where we are as a country, I don’t think you can look at the GA election in light of it being a normal runoff. And the fact that a good number of R’s didn’t show up, while more D’s did, refutes your point.
I’ve got to believe at a minimum that the VA one gets ejected. VA is a dem trifecta state, isn’t it?
At some point you have to start taking in people as prisoners of war so they can’t just return to the battlefield. We may not be there yet, but Biden’s term could see an ongoing guerrilla war with real guns and bombs that work.
I think the opposite. Dems got young people and minorities voting. Once a young person votes once, they’re a lot more likely to keep voting. The minorities in Georgia and elsewhere may fall off some, but not as much as Trumpers imo.
