The Presidency of Donald J. Trump, Episode XIV: T-minus 97 Hours

Deterrence isn’t really speculative, though. Bad deterrence is speculative. One of the best ways to teach a kid not to hit others with his Duplo set is to temporarily remove the set and then teach him/her new skills in order to earn it back. And then the child (and others nearby) are less likely to transgress in the future. The problem is that we use terrible deterrence methods focused on retribution rather than rehabilitation.

There is a distinction between:

  1. Retribution - “I want to hurt you for what you did.”
  2. Imprisonment - “I am going to lock you away so we don’t have to deal with you.”
  3. Consequence - “I am going to apply a fair but meaningful counter-response that motivates you to learn and grow in order to be successful.”
  4. Reinforcement - “I’m going to be deliberate about celebrating you for the good things you do.”

You can raise a child without 1 or 2, and our justice system needs far less of both. But try raising a child without #3 and you end up with an asshole; possibly even someone storming the Capitol Building with no fear of being held accountable.

if we replace “capitol building” with " federal bank" and every other fact stays the same, the law and order party would be screaming for felony murder charges for all involved for the cop death…

but instead the white power party supporters are going to skate with 400 dollar fine misdemeanors…

Lmao like the shooting would? Once one opens fire on BLM they’re all emptying their clip 100%. Only debate is if they reload and chase them down

Do we know how many of the six were in the Capitol?

There are millions of these people.

There are so many sides to this entire incident that you have to pick and choose which to get most upset over. My lawnmower was launched into orbit after seeing how the Capitol Police were so outnumbered and underprepared that they were easily overrun (literally) and put up virtually no resistance as the various perimeters were breached. Many of the stormers flashed military ID/law enforcement badges at the cops to let them know that they are just like them and the cops should not feel bad (or use any force trying to keep them out).

The point I am trying to make is that the crowd/mob fully took advantage of the fact that the police are predominantly white supporters of Trump. Of course, this plays out across America everyday in so many pernicious ways (minorities over-policed to put it mildly, and whites under-policed).

No more definitive proof could have been better scripted to demonstrate the double-standards of policing in America. Nobody from this point forward should be allowed to make any point defending police action against minorities/protesters as the “police just doing their job”. (Narrator?)

I’m talking about state actions that might inspire future terrorists. Drone strikes and fair trials are not equal.

Hitler was found guilty of treason and went to prison.

This is super terrifying and something I’ve been mentioning a lot since the election. It’s very likely Republicans picked up a TON of new voters and they will stick around. Possibly at a higher rate than anti trumps because they’re obviously more vigilant

They aren’t going to vote for Republicans who aren’t Trump or really Trumpy. They want to hang Pence. The question is next time around are there going to be 15 Jeb’s and 3 Trump’s running or the other way around?

So we shouldn’t prosecute people who commit treason?

Which weirdly helped him gain power and influence.

These new voters didn’t even hang around for two months to vote in Georgia. If there is no Trump on the ballot I’m optimistic many won’t bother voting in 2022/2024.

OTOH - a lot of the rage from minorities right now is that these people had the gall to run around w/o face coverings - because they know they face no serious consequences for their actions.

I’m not sure white people facing zero consequences (again) is a good thing that’s going to lead to more peace than problems in the future.

I wouldn’t be so sure of that. Sure they hate establishment reps now but they inhale right wing propaganda and think dems are pedophiles. They will believe whatever the derposphere tells them

That doesn’t follow from what I said. The post I responded to suggested that the Beer Hall Putsch was treated as lightly as possible. It wasn’t.

Whether or not we should prosecute people for treason is a completely separate question and the answer is no for reasons unrelated to whether I think some people involved in the storming should be prosecuted and how harshly.

Disagree. They knew Trump was one of them. They will never buy that Mitt Romney or Jeb Bush is. They aren’t voting D, but they aren’t showing up and putting up flags and going on parades for those guys.
