While true, this is highly unlikely bordering on fanfic.
They’ve very clearly just going to wait it out and hope Trump doesn’t do anything else.
Which, of course, is an insane way to proceed given the absolute certainty he will double down again. But when he does, they’ll just shift to “only a week left, nothing we can do now!”
I truly think you’re missing the larger point. Sure. Arrest the low IQ Trump sycophants. But the real issue that should concern us is how/why they were able to so easily get inside in the first place. You can’t walk into a city courthouse for a traffic ticket appearance without going through two guards and a metal detector. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but no way this wasn’t abetted by much higher ups
There was a lot happening, have you seen the video of cop getting squashed and screaming, while the mob and a whole lot of police are contesting the entrance?
IANAL but my understanding is that there are no specific laws against “domestic terrorism”. Obviously there should be, and it should be one of the first things taken up by the new Congress.
There are literally dozens of Federal laws that could be used against these people. Believe me, the solution is not more criminal statutes.
I don’t trust for a second that there are more charges coming or whatever. The dude that proudly broke into Pelosi’s office, posed for pictures and then gave interviews to media should spend the rest of his life in jail. This “boys will be boys” approach is absolutely unforgivable and obviously the product of a white supremacist mindset, conscious or not.
Thanks I hadn’t thought of that. McVeigh was charged with use of weapons of mass destruction (which is kind of terrorism adjacent) and straight up murder.
Not gonna lie, I’m going to miss Trumps petulant whining and pointing and laughing at how pathetic it all was. Obviously it was the right move and way too late, but I’d be lying if I didn’t get immense joy and satisfaction out of it after he had lost the election.
I was REALLY looking forward to it after he was out of office and all his whining and crying, but a nearly complete media blackout of Trump is going to do a LOT of good for this country.
To be fair, concerns about the coup are mostly about what it represents and the threat it poses going forward. The level of concern is not because five people died.
I’m starting to believe the videos of them finally letting everyone in is after they got the message that congress had been safely evacuated, and they then made a calculated decision that it was safer for everybody to just let the mob inside. (I believe other entrance points had already been breached forcefully before then. Which is how we ended up with the shooting.) This is all just an educated guess.
This is how we ended up with video of both forced entry (and desperate fighting trying to stop it) as well as just opening doors for them.
Literally just saw it and very disturbing. I’m not saying all the capital hill police were in on it. I’m saying that (in my opinion only at this point in time), they were purposely undermanned and told to stand down some. I’m saying I have questions about the abrupt firing of Esper and senior defense department personnel and replacing them with loyalists, etc. And it probably didn’t help that police lean towards Trump any way
I just find it hard to believe this was primarily a protest mob that collectively decided while we’re here, let’s storm the capital and see if we can literally overthrow the country’s election, government, and democracy in the process even though I don’t doubt for a second that everyone at the rally fervently believed the lies they’ve been fed about the election being rigged and stolen.
Again, just my own personal hypothesis based on what I know so far. The timeline is also incredibly important. The national guard most certainly wasn’t called immediately by Trump as he claimed. He was watching it unfold on TV and my understanding is that it was Pence or others who finally made the call
I just hope this gets thoroughly investigated. Trump literally attempted a coup but was too incompetent to pull it off. If he had been able to get any military cooperation it very well may have succeeded
