The oath keepers have blackwater guys.

Too bad for Trump that Comey’s not in charge anymore, we could’ve let all this slide to heal the nation or some garbage.

That “death by parasites” thing is thought to be a literary invention and was definitely not “a popular execution method of Domitian”. Who would have thought that a site called “Listerious” would not be a trustworthy source of historical information.

From an article I read about why Twitter acted now to ban Trump:

“Twitter specifically cited a concern that Trump’s followers seemed to interpret his announcement about not attending Biden’s inauguration as a signal that it would be a “safe” target for violent acts.”

I hadn’t considered that concern to be a dogwhistle to the cultists to go wild on January 20th.

I can basically walk into anywhere with my Taxi Badge round my neck hanging as it also has an official council stamp.

Helps when needing to go.

Lol, no, that’s not how you do that. You want someone to cooperate, you charge them with the top crime they committed, and then you say to them, “Hey, you don’t want to spend 20 years in jail for the crime I just charged you with? Maybe you should cooperate and I’ll knock it down.” You don’t charge them with fucking littering and tell them “Hey, you better cooperate or I might give you a $25 fine!”

I wasn’t questioning that you could see something was coming. Many could see that something was coming. I was questioning that you could see this was coming lol. This was a million monkeys mashing randomly on typewriters unexpected.

Not sure if any of this changes once Garland take over, but it’s criminal not to charge these people after 4 people died in no small part because of their incitement. My biggest fear btw, is that the new administration will dismiss this as another “let’s look forwards not backwards” situation. Obama chose to let the Bush administration entirely off the hook and Biden was after all, Obama’s VP. On the one hand, I get it. It’s almost impossible to be president without at least committing some war crime and if prosecuting crimes became the norm, almost no one would want to run. On the other, if there are zero consequences for trying to overthrow an election (and the gov’t) there will be no limit to the malfeasance a sitting president can partake in

Incompetence aside, it’s important to look at the timeline of these calls too. Was Trump at all concerned about the safety of anyone (including his own VP)? Not at all. His only concern was getting Tuberville to hold up the vote. This shows (in my mind) not only the selfishness indifference of 45, but the stoic criminality of his actions that day

The coup is yet another testament to the power of images. People are more shook by the mob behavior that resulted in 5 deaths than the pandemic that is killing thousands daily. One of the important failures of the management of Covid was trying to use Excel charts to convince the general population that there is a serious problem.

I don’t think this will happen because it seems very predictable that more violence is on the way. So you have to throw the book at these people for deterrance value and for the practical reason of preventing them from masterminding or participating in the next attack.

I admit I didn’t have [guy in his 60’s kicks back with feet atop Pelosi’s desk] on my bingo card

I agree. Up until now, I was of the minority opinion that Trump shouldn’t be charged with any crimes committed during his presidency (even though there were a ton of them I would’ve loved to see him prosecuted for) because I did think it would set a bad precedent of the two parties trying to prosecute and jail their opponents in the future. But trying to overthrow the government is so far beyond the pale that it should be easy enough to distinguish

I’m also not at all worried about causing more division, since this president was the single biggest divider of the American people in history. It was in effect, his entire strategy from the moment he rode down the escalator

The biggest priority by far is driving these lunatics back underground and ensuring it doesn’t happen again.

Everything about the response sends the message that there are few if any consequences TO STORMING THE MOTHERFUCKING CONGRESS WITH THE ENTIRE CONGRESS INSIDE. This reaction isn’t deterring anyone, and the lunatics are already regrouping online for the inauguration.

There should have already been thousands of arrests and widespread announcements of charges carrying decades in jail. This response is completely unacceptable.

Right. Biden announces he wants unity, and the right responds by saying “Unity my ass, you’ve been attacking Trump from day one”. So while I think Biden is doing the right thing by trying to unite at a time when we really need it, if the right refuses to go along with it, then you’ve got to play hardball. Make DC and PR states, pack the court, and if nothing changes, take their guns.

I am outraged as anyone over the events of the 6th, but i am going to give them more then 48 hours to sort this all out. I think there will be more charges brought over the next few days/weeks.

So in a couple weeks i will feel the same outrage, but for now maybe the wheels are turning, just not as fast as we would like.

Agree but wouldn’t it make sense to announce jail terms, say, one per day in the week before the inauguration? Scaring them now might just give them time to get frothy again before the next risky date.

I do think Democrats should be talking more about whacking these people with terrorism charges. They wouldn’t have charged the 911 attackers with trespassing.

We need unity when Dems win, but it’s go f yourself in the face when the Republicans win. Fuck that double standard.

Re: The impeachment timeline McConnell just laid out:

Murkowski has an insane amount of leverage on that. Raffensberger & Kemp could plausibly certify Ossoff & Perdue this week (and they sure as shit have no reason to delay this to help Trump). If Murkowski decided that she didn’t like McConnell’s timeline, she could declare herself an independent, caucus with the dems, now there’s 51 dems, they show up at the senate, there’s a quorom, and away we go.
