Bingo. Considering there are a lot of smart people ITT, it’s kinda eye opening people don’t see that. I mean it’s a random Friday morning in December. How many voters are even thinking about politics today? We are in the top 0.001% when it comes to politics.

Like when was the last time anyone here thought about the World Series? It was held a week before the election. No one here talks about it anymore. It’s old news. Yet I’m sure there are baseball forums that are talking about moves teams are making to get ready for next season.

One of the least discussed failures of the Democratic Party generally, and neolib douchebags specifically, is devotion to public opinion while making zero effort to shape it.

If you go out and poll random suburban shitheads in this country, they’ll almost certainly, absent Donald Trump, be pretty sympathetic to the old school GOP agenda of low taxes, infinity military spending, fuck the poor, etc. Democrats take that to mean thats just inherently what those people want, and they end up supporting dogshit GOP lite policy as a result. Well guess what, when these voters are offered a proud Republican and a Democrat trying to do a Republican impression, maybe with a sprinkle of “lets not be so mean to gay people,” they’re gonna pick the proud Republican.

The way around this is to forcefully and consistently deliver a coherent story about why the other side is wrong and you are right. Which is pretty fucking hard to do when you have delivered absolutely zero tangible benefit to normal people and even casual observers can tell you’re bought and paid for just as deeply as the GOP, who at least makes the electorate feel something other than disgust occasionally.

This is a good post but also, it’s the kind of post that you were high horsing about and characterizing as “berating everyone to the right of me”. No shit these people suck, there are those on this board that have been saying this for ages. Only to have their long similar posts denigrated by centrists. Glad you’re seeing the light but this kind of post is what the centrist crew was decrying a year ago

Well, there’s a difference between “I think the Democratic Party sucks at messaging, which is a direct result of being owned by corporations and billionaires” and “fuck you fuck you fuck you stupid fucking fuck I’m always right and you’re a piece of shit now admit you’re a shitlib fuck you,” which is, surprisingly, not an effective means of persuasion.

If the Democrats were really devoted to public opinion they’d push for gun control, M4A, marijuana legalization etc. They were also way behind on marriage equality compared to the general public.

While totally ignoring public opinion on trade and healthcare when it’s at odds with their corporate masters.

I think it can be effective if it’s not how you normally interact with people. If you’re an ass all the time you just wind up ignored.

in IL they tried a graduate tax (only the rich have to pay it), spent a ton of money on ads promoting it, polled at 65% approve of the measure at one point

and it lost in the election by 6 points despite biden winning the state by 17

turns out, some of that shit is exactly what people want

I’m guessing here but I’m willing to bet WAY more money was spent against it. This notoriously happens in here in CA with propositions with tax increases on anything. Opposition massively outspends it and does a ton of commercials to demonize usually complex for laymen propositions and make them think its actually attacking normal everyday Americans.

I don’t have time to post the research but I am pretty sure the science suggest otherwise.

I wouldn’t say you are wrong, but at the end of the day primary voters did actually vote for Biden. They didn’t have to.

I’m going to love it when NY convicts him of the crimes and then DeSantis refuses to extradite Florida Man from Florida.

Is there a predictit market on this?

I’m being completely serious here. By this metric Trump may be the most loved President of all time. I doubt that there are any other presidents for whom people are legit willing to die for. Plenty of people say that about Trump. Now many are full of shit and would have a change of heart with an actual gun to their head, but I think that a non-trivial percentage of them actually would.

They’re all nutjobs, but that still counts as love, right?

It was him vs. THE COMMIE AND THE BROWNSHIRTS.

What choice did they have?

I agree, at the same time I blame the media more than the Dem E. They were legit out there vaguely comparing him to Nazis and Castro. It was a full media blitz on anti bernie shit.

It’s going to be SUPER tough to overcome propaganda from both sides and all the monied interests. Him getting the percentage he did is kind of amazing despite all of that, plus warren fucking him over as well.

But yeah getting a progressive president will be very, very tough. But maybe after 4 years of failure and no stimulus it will push the needle closer on the small chance we don’t go full fascism in the time.

Good points. Like you say perhaps a combination is the best path. How centrist of me. :grinning:
