But I thought he ho-hummed COVID-19 because he didn’t want to terrify Americans…

It’s such an odd opinion piece. First, the article is like, “look I know you’d love to prosecute him on what seems to be, at least at first glace, obvious pieces of corruption…but we have given the Presidency nearly unlimited power, especially when it comes to being able to do corruptions… sooo what are you doing to do?”

But AFAIK no ones talking about merely prosecuting him for anything he’s actually done in office. There’s a whole goldmine of things he’s done even before the Presidency that the courts said have to be put on hold because he’s the President.

And second asDavid Weigel pointed out, Trump’s already talking about running again. It’d be one thing if Trump was done and being shuffled out of political life ( but even then he should be prosecuted), but by not prosecuting him you’re handing him a Get Out of Political Jail Free card so he gets to avoid talking about all the corruption and law breaking in his first term.

5-4 talks about this a little bit this week, but a textbook tactic for powerful people is to block the aggrieved from obtaining evidence of wrongdoing, then get lawsuits tossed based on a lack of evidence.

God only knows what he’s been up to for the last four years! What we do know is obviously criminal, the Ukraine thing is straight up treason, and he obviously committed obstruction of justice about 100x, but beyond that, the extent of his criminality is limited only by our collective imaginations.

Saying we shouldn’t charge him before any kind of competent investigation is conducted is bootlicking insanity.

I don’t think I can read this and continue to function. Like literally I think I’d stroke out.
Is this Bret or ?

The author is Eric Posner (no idea who that is).

The text of the article is actually worse than I was expecting (no small feat).

Counterpoint: there’s no law that says he can’t run for POTUS if he’s convicted.

Son of noted LAW AND ECONOMICS SUPER SCHOLAR Richard Posner.

Amazing how these economic gurus can’t grasp the concept of incentives and literally always land on the side of the rich and powerful.

Incentives work like this in their minds: poor people do nothing if you hand them some money. Rich people do nothing if you take some of their money. The conclusion: if you let the rich exploit the poor, everybody has the inventive to work!
