She also has hot takes like we should bring back head of household voting (in which married couples get one vote. She later clarified that in cases where the couple disagreed, “godly” couples would defer to the man)
I’m tired of consoling 7-year-olds who ask me why everyone wants to keep their families out of America.
I’m tired of working in correctional facilities and seeing 90% minority kids whose only real crime is being born into an inescapable life of trauma and disenfranchisement.
I’m tired of developing safety plans with teenagers who are suicidally terrified of the prejudice they’ll face when coming out.
I’m tired of talking to 12-year-olds who view their lives as being limited by the color of their skin instead of defined by their capabilities.
I’m tired of seeing kids feel hated, limited, and lost because of the conditions and packages they were born into. And I am so fucking tired of seeing them proven right.
I would love for the democrats to push for more than incremental change, but there are so still many families whose lives hang in the balance of increments. I hope we have a real chance to fight for them.
They appeal directly to emotions, they never ask their viewers to eat their vegetables (think deeply, be introspective, or consider in depth aspects of policy). They always leave their viewers blameless by attacking out groups as the ones to blame for all that ails them.
They also appeal to some of the most evolutionarily powerful emotions. Think Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. They’re going towards the bottom of the pyramid - safety and security. THE MOBS ARE COMING TO GET YOU!!! BE AFRAID!!!
They also address esteem. Lost your job? Making less money? Feel like the elites are looking down on you? NOT YOUR FAULT, IT’S THE MOBS OF MS-13 IMMIGRANTS STEALING YOUR JOBS AND OH BY THE WAY MS-13 IS COMING TO MURDER YOU YOU ARE NOT SAFE!!! BE ANGRY!!!
I mean, shit, they even go for the very base of the pyramid. Food? Democrats want to ban you from eating beef!
It’s gradually being replaced by data protection, but I can assure you it’s served a valuable purpose as something for cranks to hassle advocacy workers about.
I’ve never seen The Americans, but I often think about what a terrible effect a lot of the cop procedurals and shows like 24 had on our politics as a country. I mean, I loved 24 when it was on back in the day, but I was smart enough to know that it’s fiction and it’s not like every brown person with a beard I see in real life is trying to blow me up. Like, none of them are.
But even worse, 24 and police procedurals always have beloved characters who paint outside the lines, beat the shit out of bad guys, etc. Of course they always are in a position where they KNOW it’s the bad guy, they KNOW what he did, and he DESERVES what’s coming. He’s a child molester who’s going to get off on a technicality, so it’s okay if Stabler slams his face into the pavement a few times. He’s a terrorist trying to blow up innocent Americans, so it’s okay if Jack Bauer rips his fingernails off and shoves a towel down his throat and rips it back out.
I mean, even in The Wire, which is a great show, it’s not like all the cops who do bad shit are explicitly portrayed as being bad in doing it. Like Herc and Carver aren’t really bad guys in the show early on when Herc is pretty into the brutality and Carver is too (though he later reforms his behavior).
It’s the appeal to the amygdala and whatever part of the brain religion lives in. The content becomes much like the gospels for Christians: Black people bad (Tucker 8:10), AOC stupid (Rush 1:15). You can’t really argue faith, so trying to convince them of anything is pointless. Basically, Fox News and the others need to be brought back under a fairness standard. Should have been a big priority for Obama, but no.
Racism doesn’t even make any practical sense. Like even in a hypothetical world where a group of naturally purple-haired people were slightly less capable than everyone else, we’d collectively be best-served by supporting rather than disenfranchizing them. This nonsense logic of “I think you have a lower IQ and higher crime rate than I do, so I’m going to make your life miserable” is effectively like beating up kids in special education.
Which I guess is why Republicans enjoy it so much?
ETA: Cuse is right re: supposed racial differences being explained by SES and related factors (e.g., childhood trauma, poorly-funded education, etc.). The purple-haired people don’t exist.
What are you even talking about? My mom is a retired teacher is it is common sense to her that Mexicans ruin the education of good white children because they refuse to learn English and it’s actually part of their culture to blow off school and return to Mexico for months at a time and they don’t even want to be smart or educated so it’s actually a waste of money to expand free college programs. She would swear up and down that none of this is racist.
