Tennis anyone?

YOU ARE CORRECT SIR

He also guessed the second highest ranked such person right after that

I watch more tennis than most and I try to at least watch the finals if the 250s

I just know he lost 3-4 finals in the last 12 months and can’t remember him winning one.

Think he got Monte Carlo but that must have been 22

I’ve been watching a lot of Challenger events lately, they stream every match and I like being able to see young up and comers battle with washed up has beens. And some never weres. I don’t know how some of these guys keep going. I watched Sandgren-Krueger yesterday when Wimbledon got rained out, 31 year old Sandgren playing 29 year old Krueger. Sandgren had some modest success on tour but Krueger turned pro in 2012 and has a peak rank of 135. Played 25 ATP level matches:

Like holy shit that is an absolutely brutal existence. A million dollars in prize money in 11 years.

But if one of these old guys I’ve been watching makes a miraculous run in some slam I’ll be rooting hard for them, will be a cool story.

Like damn man, that sucks. That dude is impossibly good at tennis but only good enough to scrape by. After travel and expenses it’s nothing.

And Nishikori is in that Challenger too, back from injury. Would suck big time to be the 250th player in the world and you draw Nishikori as a wild card. DAMMIT!

Hopefully he gets enough sponsor dollars to cover the travel. No entourage for sure.

I would assume someone like that can have a nice coaching career after retiring from competitive play.

Like coaching pros? Or a country club tennis pro? For sure the latter, the former, idk, maybe.

I was thinking country club stuff. I have relatives that are very into tennis and relatively affluent, they spend a pretty penny on personal training from a club pro.

I’m sure the winner of a few Challenger 75s could get a pretty high end tennis pro job, so sure.

That sounds sarcastic as I type it but I mean that sincerely. Like winning a Challenger is a tremendous achievement and Krueger is an incredibly good tennis player. Just not quite good enough to make a decent living at it.

I mean understanding the tech side of tennis and being able to analyse and communicate that well is way more important to coaching than having won a cup or something.

Some real thick fuckers have done very well in sports.

Probably but a couple of trophies will get you in the door.

That’s why I like watching the Challengers. Just two washed up, burned out pros giving it one last shot. No coaches, six people watching in person including the officials and 100 weirdos streaming the match online.

Like two time Australian Open quarterfinalist Sandgren (ranked 240 now) is battling it out hoping that he can eek out a few dozen ranking points so he can get into the US Open qualifying. Not the main draw, the qualies. There’s something compelling about that to me.

This is happening about 10 miles from my work. Was thinking of taking a day and going just didn’t work out. Will try to hit it next year.

I am going to cincy this year. Friday-Sunday package. Haven’t been back since 15 or 16

Rumor has it that Cinci might get replaced in a year or two.

I was just thinking about that, I’m going to be in Grand Haven to visit my dad all that week with my brother and nephews. I wonder if the kids would like going down there or if they’d hate it. Be a gamble for sure.

They are six and nine, they’d probably hate it.

If you go earlier in week you get watch top 50 players on the outer courts from 10 feet away. It’s amazing. My very first match was gasquet at the 09 Toronto masters. Guys are so good.

I had no idea. This is not exactly triumphant, but it’s nice:

I may have shared this before, but here’s a picture of Dizzy Gillespie smoking a cigarette (or something stronger) while playing tennis in his underpants.
