SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

Does anyone else think it’s a crazy idea to start mass producing a bunch of different vaccine candidates as soon as they enter safety trials? If the vaccine fails, then you destroy what you’ve produced. But as soon as one is good you have a large amount available.

It could be done by asking companies to do it at no risk - i.e., we pay for it even if it doesn’t work. Or by seizing the means of production under the war powers act.

Seems like a much better use of resources than bailing out McDonald’s and American Airlines, but I haven’t seen anybody else float this idea.

It would be tragic to miraculously develop an approved vaccine in a shortened timeline only to then have to wait 12 more months to produce enough to dose everybody.

New York City mayor on risk to medical supplies

Bill de Blasio says his city is just two to three weeks away from running out of critical medical supplies.

Three million N-95 masks, 50 million surgical masks, 15,000 ventilators, 25 million surgical gowns and 25 million gloves are needed “by early in April”, New York’s mayor said, “for us to ensure that our healthcare system, public and private, can bear the brunt of the coronavirus crisis.”

The cry for help comes as New York City reports a total of 3,615 confirmed Covid-19 cases, and 22 deaths.

“This is going to be one of the most difficult moments in New York City history,” de Blasio said.

De Blasio yesterday called upon the US military to intervene in the coronavirus outbreak in his city

“I want their medical teams, I want their logistical support… the only force in America that can do that effectively and quickly,” he said.

That might be the debunked video shot in Ukraine doing the rounds (tank is driving on the right i.e the wrong side of the road?)

Wonder if that’s a response to you calling for the Irish army in the other thread?!

ICE not deporting if you’ve got Coronavirus (honest)

US immigration officers scale back arrests amid crisis

In the US, the immigration agency says its officers won’t arrest undocumented migrants at healthcare facilities, apart from in exceptional circumstances.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (Ice) says that during the coronavirus crisis, people “should not avoid seeking medical care because they fear civil immigration enforcement”.

Ice also says it will narrow the scope of its arrests to undocumented migrants who they say pose “public safety risks” or face serious criminal charges.

Over the past year, Ice intensified its campaign against undocumented people in the US after President Donald Trump ordered them to round up and deport them.

Immigrants can defend themselves from ICE by hacking up a lung anytime they try to arrest them.

this a grunch and may be poined… but the Senator Burr warning his rich donors about the actual coronavirus threat is missing the part where he sold of his 1.5 MILLION dollars in stocks based on the private daily briefings he was getting…

Czech government to pay $40bn for workers’ wages

The Czech government has pledged $40 billion (£35 billion) to businesses so they can pay their workers’ wages.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis said the money would be made up of $4bn in aid, and the rest would be loan guarantees, so firms can weather the huge losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday the Czech Republic reported 134 new cases of the illness in 24 hours, bringing its total up to 694.

bro. also in oklahoma. did you see our 3rd/4th biggest city today decided that corona isn’t a real thing and that they are “open for business”

Czech Republic is essentially a welfare state. Nobody’s gonna get fucked too hard by the government (at least economically).

Babis is a corrupt scumbag but he’s and his party are gonna come out of this smelling like roses even though fighting this hasn’t gone completely according to plan.

The bad news is if you aren’t rich, you probably haven’t been tested and thus can’t prove you have the virus.

And how many of these are actually COVID “cases” in that these people tested positives? We are so fucked.

What’s up with all the famous people who test positive for coronavirus all feeling fine and just resting at home, aren’t some of them about to take a turn for the worse or suddenly drop dead? Why are they all so chill about it?

Money cures everything

The lines at Universities are also insane and young people change address a ton. It’s either true that neither old people nor young people would go very far out of their way to vote or they both would depending on what you call “very far”, but old people are no better. It’s just easier for them to vote.

Super-grunching a lot, but @Jalfrezi seems to be killing it. Anyone who expects some other generation to be better people than boomers or whatever is crazy. Also, how convenient that a group of people who are all like 40 years old thinks that everyone who is younger than them sucks and also everyone older than them.

My mother has been voting in the same building for 35 years.

Most people who test positive don’t need to be hospitalized. Also, most celebrities don’t have comorbidities. There is prob a bit of stiff upper lip.

Yeah, this. I’ve been voting in the same place for 14 years or so and by mail. Microdaughter has had 5 different addresses in the last 4 years and spent months traveling. She still voted, but from a place where she has only lived for a few months. Shuffle 65 year olds around like that and they wouldn’t all be voting.
