Pronunciations and Anti Thread Derails

CW, I’m not an authority on Spanish and all its dialects, but from what I do know, turning a CH sound into an SH sound is not really a thing. And I have been to Chile and never really heard people saying it like she-lay, so I’m reasonably sure that pronunciation is incorrect here… Not confirmed though. @Fossilkid93

Yea, that! Thanks. Nobody had any idea what cities I was trying to say in Poland.

My Mexican girlfriend says the sh sound is somewhat common, but it mostly depends on the local accent. In Mexico I don’t think I’ve ever heard that sound so I always use the ch sound. If you use the ch sound I’m sure almost everyone will understand you.

I checked the Forvo pronunciations for Chile and 9/9 Chileans used the ch sound, so sounds like they would most likely say CHEE-lay as CS04 pointed out.

Strongly related to this thread is that Turkey would like their country to be called Turkiye going forward in English.

In Turkish it’s spelled Türkiye (slightly diff pronunciation on the u and e at the end).

So it would mostly be in line with how it’s said in their language and they’re prob sick of all the Thanksgiving jokes.

I’d imagine it would be quite some time for everyone to get the memo and switch over.

I’d put the phonetic at “chai-lie” but yah we murder that one.

Hmm, Interesting. In Mexico the only sh sounds I ever heard was for Mayan words that had an X in them.

I almost brought up Chai-Lie earlier. I usually try to ask people new to Rochester to guess that one. Nobody ever gets it within 3 tries.

Just remember, at a certain level its actually a parody of itself.

At it’s best, it’s just healthy self deprecation. At it’s worst, it isn’t any different than a deplorable making fun of an ethnic name

Here’s a video I enjoyed that really helped me not give a frick.

Ha, that’s great. Adams seems like a cool dude.

Can’t listen to Adams and not think of this vid, which will probably make sense to noone else. (Basically it’s just poking fun at the Kiwi accent and quirky sayings)
