Playing Golf: One Putt Bogey

I was having finger pain from using an interlocking grip. Recently started playing around with not interlocking the fingers of my hands and it feels a lot better despite going against all convention. Right now I only do it for long irons, but it hasn’t really affected my consistency with them

Against convention is funny. Interlocking grip was heavily frowned upon when I was growing up. I’m pretty sure it didn’t become popular until Tiger showed up with it. Most people used the Hogan grip.

Ah, point of clarification, I don’t overlap my pinky and index finger like the hogan grip, either. Now it’s much closer to a baseball bat grip, except for the thumb.

Might cause you to have more pulls with that grip

Shot a 99 today. 38 putts. 2 really bad 3 putts. 2 reasonable ones from 60 ft or so. 5 duffs which were stupid annoying. 2 smacked trees.

Completely lost the driver today. Had to put it away. Couldn’t make any sort of contact. Back to the range for that.

Honestly kind of confused when I added up my score, but what saved me was:

  1. Zero shots OOB, lost or in the water. Played with the same ball all day
  2. Zero double chips/pitches
  3. I hit the green on almost every single shot from 130 and in.

Conditions were pretty wet today. Took a few free drops because I was in a puddle in the fairway. Not sure if that’s the rule, don’t really care tbh.

Last approach of the day made me laugh:

This happens to you a lot?

This is correct but I would drop it behind the puddle not next to it.

When I was shooting 104-108 it’d happen 1-3x per round. Now that I’m shooting low 100s/high 90s generally (my last 7 rounds have been 102 or less), it rarely happens now. More confidence in my chipping means I don’t decelerate often anymore.

It seems like what you’re doing is lifting your club too high at impact. Just sweep the ground. This should basically never happen unless you’re in really deep rough where you have to lift through the ball.

Also, I recommend getting a chip/putter. It has the angle of a 7 or 8 iron but plays like a putter. You will thank me. I used to be an amazing chipper, but something went wrong and that got it back for me when I was still playing. I was chunking far too often.

I’m in a good spot with my chipping. Double chips was just something I started keeping track of when I started playing again. I either use a 7i, 9i, or PW depending on how much rollout I want. Just needed to play/practice it enough.

Switch to a 6 iron and 8 iron instead of 7 and 9. Practice it and watch the difference.

Lesson learned today:

Do not, repeat do not, try to play 18 after doing physical therapy on your knee. Your swing will go to pieces. Shot a 105, will never talk about it again lol.

Eliminating penalty strokes makes huge difference. Whenever I lose focus on that is typically when my scores go from upper 80s to mid-upper 90s.

Also, don’t buy expensive balls until you rarely lose any in rounds. Balls are incredibly more expensive than they used to be.

My favorites in the middle ground were Titleist NXT Tour (two varieties) and some kind of Maxfli (can’t remember what it was called maybe Tour). The NXT Tours were pretty inherently reliable for what you’d get. I haven’t played in 3 years, so I can’t imagine golf ball prices right now.

Kirkland balls are OP. About as good as v1 pros, 35 bucks for 24 of them

Those are like Top Flite prices

Developed some near trigger fingers in both pinkies. Going to have to work on my grip I think and take a bit of time off.

I love a hack player golf thread! Pros can go elsewhere.

Balls? wtf.
My kid is into all the weird expensive balls. I have no idea what the names mean. Just give me all the dirty shit ones and we’ll play. Neither of us are that good.

name checks out

lol well I hit a small bucket of balls today to get out of the house (sick three year old and an ER visit made me antsy - she’s fine now, just croup).

Swing path for the driver got a lot better. Controlling the face really seems to be a problem because I tend to extend my wrist early, which opens my face quite a bit and gives me a very narrow window where the face is straight. I strengthened my grip a bit, started hitting mostly draws or little fades, mostly around 230-250

Might try another coach for some lessons, but I also feel like I’m so close to really breaking through

You’re not. It’s golf.
