Personal Finance - Home Ownership

Think current conventional wisdom is that increasing mortgage/interest rates will kneecap ability to finance building and purchase of new homes.

Is it possible to hold I Bonds in an IRA? Looking to make a purchase, but the tax drag is pretty significant.

No, they have to be custodied at Treasury Direct, which doesn’t offer retirement accounts. The interest on the bonds, however, is tax free until you redeem them.

Nothin wrong with Chicago except the winter.

And traffic. Although I suppose it may be better after COVID.

It’s not.

Well then that’s two things wrong with Chicago.

Almost no zoning regulations allow building of high rise apartments in desirable neighborhoods.

Excellent regional train systems and layout of city transit system (El) allow for a ton of areas to build where your commute is tolerable.

There’s still tons of building in the city in areas that aren’t dangerous but aren’t massively sought after so home prices are reasonable for people who still want to live in the city in a way they aren’t in places like SF, NYC, DC, Boston, etc.

Great neighborhood feel where each neighborhood has multiple streets/strips of bars/restaurants/entertainment so that everyone doesn’t have to go to the same places to get what they want out of city living.

Like 10 miles of legit swimmable beach in the city limits.

Violence is highly publicized but mostly limited to specific neighborhoods or after midnight. Have lived here for 10+ years and know 2 people that have been a victim of crime that rises above petty theft.

Prices seem to be down ~5% around here but homes still seem to be getting contacts signed very quickly.

Can’t believe nobody mentioned the pizzas. It’s a problem.

Liked about everything else in Chicago. Cool city. But the pizzas - just no! [pot’l derail incoming]

Had deep dish twice this week, delish.

HOT TAEK: I like both Chicago-style pizza AND New York-style pizza!

Also, I’m sure you can get “regular” pizza in Chicago. I don’t think there’s a deep dish-only law.

My local place serves a deep dish pizza that has a New York stylr pizza buried in the crust. Perfect marraige imo.

Still no word on when my home will be finished. Waiting on PGE to connect the gas basically now.

It’s impossible not to like deep dish. Even if it’s not one’s favorite type of pizza, it’s still pizza.

Man this is basically a perfect storm for the RE market to instantly freeze up.

High mortgage rates
Likely recession
Stonks way down
Tech companies laying off / not hiring

Yeah this might actually impact Austin which is basically impossible to so much as dent to date.

For the first time in years the zillow estimate of my home value (which is unrealistically high to begin with) went down. Down 1.5% in the last month.

same here

Mine is up 6.5% in the past month
