This is infuriating. First he says it’s will be $8000 over MSRP.
Yeah, that’s is fucking nuts.
That is one of the reasons I like ordering a vehicle. That way every dealer is competing for your business over literally the exact same vehicle. So you just take the best offer and see if anyone else can beat it. Rinse and repeat until no one is willing to go lower. If that ends up being 8K over MSRP, then at least you know for sure you’re getting fucked by the market and not the dealer.
I can’t stress enough how bad an idea it is to buy a car right now if you don’t absolutely need one. I literally wouldn’t buy another car right now unless one of our two vehicles got wrecked. Even then I would try to figure out how to survive on one car.
There’s the usual loss when you drive off the lot which I’ve made peace with and then there’s this. This shit here is going to result in people being 20-25k upside down on cars in the next 24-36 months when this shortage clears.
You would be better off doing a rental month by month at this point if you can find one.
I looked into that. Rental prices are insane now too. At least 3x of what I customarily paid in most cases.
Yeah my girlfriend and I are currently going with one car and it sucks. She needs one, and I keep talking her out of buying one in this market. Unfortunately she needs needs one in August, so she’s going to get fucked no matter what at this point. We’re considering flying out of state to buy a used car and drive it back because the price gap is potentially worth it.
I’m also considering suggesting she buy a total clunker and hope it runs for 6-18 months to just get her through the shortage. Just a nightmare situation for someone in her situation (who can’t really afford to spend much).
Really? There are states where cars that much cheaper? Where would you fly to?
I’d look into you ubering wherever it is you need to go when she has to have a car. I wish I was kidding. It’s definitely better for the man to be taking a bunch of ubers risk wise.
It sucks that there are so few places in the U.S. where it’s easy to live without a car
Is uber risky? I’m sure there is some crime, but I’d think it would be the dumbest way for any criminal to commit a crime. You have a very detailed record of the entire interaction (who the driver was, where they went, etc.).
How much worse is it than waiting at a bus stop?
Women get harassed in ubers a lot is my understanding of the situation.
That’s different from what I was imagining. Definitely bad and seems plausible. Also totally plausible that Uber would just ignore repeated passenger complaints about this sort of thing.
Isn’t this true of any country with a lot of rural communities?
Well, in a lot of these places (in other countries), life is so shitty that lack of a car doesn’t even enter one’s mind as a hardship. And if someone just showed up and gave them a car for free, the most +EV thing they could do would be to sell the car and use the money to address some of their many other hardships.
I’ve lived in the middle of cities where it was shitty to not have a car.
I could have gotten by without a car in NOLA, but it would have sucked ass. Definitely would have increased my chances of getting shot.
Have you ridden Uber much lately? There is a massive shortage of Ubers. From where I live in central Atlanta, it went from being guaranteed 3-5 minutes to get ride in 2019, to being a 20 minute ordeal that costs 2-3x what it used to. I pretty much never use Uber anymore.
Lyft is quite a bit more available, but it’s still a crapshoot at peak times.
People overestimate how much they need their cars. Cuse plays poker for a living, so he needs one less than most. Buying a car right now is a big loss that would take at least a couple of hundred ubers to cover. If he only needs 2-3 a week to cover the times when the wife has the car it maths.
I agree with that; I’m basically not driving my Sonata right now because my GF has an electrical car and works from home, and gas is $$$.
But at the same time buying a new car is terrible, so is Ubering in the pandemic times–moreso than I think people have realized.
costs 2-3x what it used to
I don’t typically have a long wait, but have experienced similar cost changes.
Really? There are states where cars that much cheaper? Where would you fly to?
Looks like used cars that are $12-18K here are $3-4K cheaper in the south/midwest. Also Michigan appears to have significantly cheaper used cars than Pennsylvania.

I’ve thought about it, but Ubering to and from casinos all hours of the night seems very risky. Right now an Uber to the casino would also be about $50.
It’s not just the rural communities, though. I don’t think @commonwealth lives in the sticks.
Right, I’m in the suburbs but about 40 minutes away from the closest casino.

It would make a lot more sense if I lived closer to the casino, and if I wasn’t traveling 90-120 minutes to casinos where I get hotel offers for a couple days a week for better games. It makes it very complicated.
