Organizing Unstuck 2020

I’m a bad student who’s posting on UP during his texting course.

For those of you that did this text training, do you remember how long it was before you got your email containing the instructions to actually begin texting? They said I’d get it within 20 minutes of the end of training but it’s been 1.5 hours and nothing yet. I wanted to strike while the iron was hot, so to speak.

I did it immediately after the training. My memory may be failing me, but I think I just joined the slack channel, no email necessary.

yeah, just join the slack, it should work. then post the “im ready for next steps” or whatever the bot quote is

I’ve signed up for training but next week is earliest slot so I’ll be texting as much as possible the last few weeks before the election.

Thanks for the replies. I finally got the email I was looking for and just did my first texting to 300 people. It’s kinda fun actually and I look forward to doing more.

Hey I’m sorry I never replied to your PM. This week has been crazy for me and I just totally forgot.

Glad you got the email and got started! I agree it’s fun when you get in a rhythm, and the more you do it the easier it becomes. Thanks for your efforts so far!

All good. And lol at the difference between the responses to my first 300 and second 300. Clearly different lists!

For those of you doing campaign texts, any idea how to block these texts? I am getting so many every day that it is incredibly annoying. I feel like this certainly has to be turning off some potential voters that there’s no organization to it and even if I respond in detail with my voting plans I continue to get contacted 10 times a day.

They are all from different campaigns so the only thing to do is reply stop to each one. Most texting apps detect that automatically and will opt you out

Thanks, definitely #firstworldproblems but I have been getting inundated with them lately.

Meb, I might be part of your problem because I’m like addicted to texting now lol. I want to do it every day, all day. The campaign actually doesn’t release enough texts to keep me satisfied lol

it’s pretty fun, right?

of course, sometimes you get an asshole, but most people are actually not bad.

Fair warning…you’ll get more assholes the closer we get to Nov 3…they are getting inundated.

Seriously, and then conversely I have fun with the people from the Biden campaign who are texting me.

I’m glad you all are out there. I was just annoyed by the number of texts I was getting, and I feel like it would be better if there was someway to coordinate better amongst Democrat interests.

another thing you’re seeing is that with the advent of actblue and the 24-hour news cycle is that any election (and a LOT of elections) can be a national election now. With the addition of COVID and the advent of zoom campaign events, you’re seeing people getting engaged and donating/volunteering to candidates all over the country. This means a lot of donor and volunteer recruitment lists are all cross-pollinating, so if you’re on Biden’s list, you will probably end up on some down ballot lists.

Also, if you contribute to say, that anti-McConnell fund set up by the Pad Save America guys, you’re now on the list of every senator they split your donation between…and you’ll get all their texts. Also, if you gave money to Bernie, he gave his list to the Our Revolution PAC, and they give that list to the candidates they endorsed…so yeah, there you go, even more texts.

One good thing: all your local candidates will stop bugging you with GOTV texts/calls a day or two after you submit your ballot, because the list gets culled automatically.

You will probably still get fundraising shit until you opt out, though. BTW, those are usually two entirely different lists using entirely different robotext/email apps.

My friend Nessa lays it on the line. She’s more of a tiktok and snapchatter and has like 50k followers there. She also spends a lot of time in republican chat rooms (yeah, I guess those still exist) trying to win over conservatives.

Did the training and just sent my first 300 texts to MN Republicans.

Got a few no/opt out, one “go trump” and a dozen “voting blue this time” or “trump is human garbage” replies.

Feeling good about MN Republicans voting Biden (assuming their targeting is decent, but a few mentioned “this time” so pretty sure they are Republicans usually)

The lists come straight from voter rolls, so it’s based on registration.

Of note: in the midwest I’ve noticed, people tend to just lazily register whatever party their parents use, so you might find people who never bothered to change it.

Shoot I was planning on volunteering/donating and the election has kind of snuck up on me being only three weeks away, with me being out of town for one of those weeks. What can I do in the interim that would be most helpful? Also should I be donating to specific campaigns or just general donations to Democrats? All I’ve done so far is donate to the Wisconsin Dems for their events. I was planning on donating to Kelly but I don’t think he needs the money.
