**Official** Physicists are freaks and very weird dudes LC Thread

I like the good posts that came from me insinuating Einstein was a plagiarist and I wish there was some shit to talk about the other big names but I got nothing, it’s just thieving ass Albert, all the other physicists and mathematicians are good. What can you even say?

Ramanujan used to yell at skateboarders, go.

Damn it I just remembered Nash. Now he was a real piece of shit even factoring in the mental illness.

For anyone who enjoys learning more about improving our communication skills, these two videos, from MIT and U of Chicago respectively, deal with speaking and writing. Both of the instructors are high level communicators and engaging, especially considering the classroom settings. A good number of “Aha” moments in both lectures.

This is not a freshman level writing seminar. He’s giving this lecture to people who are in masters or PhD programs.

Reminds me somewhat of this comment about Wittgenstein by freeman dyson.

Apparently not, I mean, that would stump you on a jeopardy question right?

Yeah, I’m probably being too hard on Nash and his tortured genius but I read the biography that movie was based on and whoo boy did it stick with me.

I hardly know where to begin. Feynman, Newton, Hawking,… Ok a lot of guys were just ordinary jerks or oddballs. But the intersection of the sets of assholes and great physicists is far from empty.

What is the correct pronounciation of Michaelson?

I have heard both of the following:

  1. Michael + son
  2. Same as Phil Mickelson

Ok but are they also chronic plagiarists and masturbators?

It depends on how the owner of the name pronounces it. The first is the Anglicized version.

Yeah, I’m talking about this guy specifically. How did he pronounce his name/ want it pronounced?

When referring to him, I’ve heard people use both of those.

Tough case because he was born in Germany. There’s a decent chance his family switched to an Americanized pronunciation upon immigrating and I’d they didn’t then he would have had some pressure to switch during WW1. I lean towards the Anglicized version because I haven’t met any pedantic dicks who strongly insist it’s the other way.

Republican legislature passes a law saying that social media companies can’t moderate views that don’t like…with an exception

The term does not include any information service, system, Internet search engine, or access software provider operated by a company that owns and operates a theme park or entertainment complex as defined in 509.013, F.S.

That strikes me as a really weird anecdote. Can you say more about what you like about it?

I asked myself twice, “Do you really want to watch this?” And then I watched anyway. Albert was a notorious horndog. Feynman and Hawking had that tendency too. Newton died a virgin and Tesla was afraid of women. Maybe it mostly averages out.

Replying as a reminder to check this out later. Seems interesting.

This adds a little context.

Dyson is one physicist who was not an asshole, afaik.
