Being dependent on your declared enemy for food during winter months was an unmistakeable sign that it couldnât continue indefinitely. The hierarchy finally recognised this when they appointed Gorbachev to reform the country, but probably didnât anticipate the momentum of his changes and how pro-West his successor would be.
The only connection with Reagan was when the Challenger, which was supposed to be the crown jewels of his presidency, blew up and made him look elsewhere for a legacy - detente with the USSR.
Nor people in the US, but itâs still wrong. Ask people what they think Reagan did to end the Soviet Union and all youâll get is a bunch of vague non-answers.
Thatâs news to me. I doubt any US-based poster remembers it this way. I recall heâd wanted to do a call to Challenger during the State of the Union and no doubt he wanted the PR from McAauliffe being a teacher in space but thatâs about it.
Kennedy is the only president I strongly associate with space exploration. Been downhill since then.
Most outstanding figure in world history for Russians? Reagan doesnât make the list. Stalin is #1. Not kidding. Napoleon makes the list too. Killing a lot of Russians apparently popular.
Iâm not sure how serious Star Wars ever was. Could have been a bluff to get the Soviets to expend resources. No doubt there were people who believed it was a practical idea but it was and remains pretty far out there.
