National Basketball Association - 2022/23 Season (Part 1)

Major issue that has been made apparent in the playoffs as a whole is the NBA needs to change the way they are calling fouls on the inside. Way too many offensive fouls being called and not enough defensive fouls. Also, not enough penalty for constant flopping and undercutting of driving players. The way the game is currently being called means that any strategy other than just shooting 3s is suboptimal.

And to head off anyone who thinks this just about the Bucks series, itā€™s not. Saw a stat that thereā€™s been something like 60% more offensive fouls called this postseason than ever before. The officiating has changed in a negative way against attempting to get points off of driving or scoring in the paint.

Offensive players need to start actually trying to beat their defenders instead of just running into them. Nobody wants to watch games where offensive players initiate contact and get to the FT line 50 times a game.

Thing is if you are good at shooting 3s you can get to the paint much easier because of spacing. Warriors get a ton of points in the paint because of spacing.

Motion offense, ball movement, good shooting is way more aesthetically appeasing than offensive players just trying to run into guys in the paint hoping for fouls and getting to the FT line. Plus it opens up the paint and we can watch guys actually beat their defenders and get in the paint.

Scoring is at an all time high, last thing we need is offensive players getting a lot more FTs.

I love Grant - I think Iā€™ve referred to him a couple times in this thread as my husky son. That joke came from his rookie year when Iā€™d constantly defend him to all my buddies.

Iā€™ll say this in defense of his detractors - he wasnā€™t in shape last year. He was too heavy, and he took a step back. Heā€™s turned it around and earned himself - what, at least 40 million this season. Whatā€™s his floor now for an extension - 4 for $55? Iā€™m not an NBA contract knower but itā€™s got to be around there.

I believe the guy that solved dating loved Grant in the draft, too.

ā€œTHATS WHAT I DOā€

Yeah Grant is awesome and his defense on Giannis was insane.

Offensive players need to start actually trying to beat their defenders instead of just running into them. Nobody wants to watch games where offensive players initiate contact and get to the FT line 50 times a game.

Except this isnā€™t whatā€™s happening. Instead defenders are incentivized to flop and undercut driving players because theyā€™re more likely than ever to have an official call an offensive foul. The result is teams being rewarded for playing a really ugly style of basketball.

Scoring is at an all time high

This isnā€™t true, and even if it was isnā€™t an issue.

My concern with Mavs is that I am worried Luka will push too hard early. He has a lot of experience in elimination games but if he pushes and gets missed shots and turnovers, on the road, it could be over quickly.

Really be looking for him to distribute early on if not I will be concerned.

Maybe driving players should adjust by trying harder to avoid contact.

They are. Defensive players are being incentivized to initiate contact and then flop. Offensive fouls are being called at a significantly higher rate than ever before.

And what youā€™re saying leads to ugly basketball on the interior, and a situation where anything other than just firing up a million 3s becomes ridiculously suboptimal.

II donā€™t think itā€™s ugly. Marcus Smart is my favorite player to watch.

So you enjoy watching no talent floppers who consistently try to injure opposing teams star players? That explains your viewpoint, but I think pro wrestling would be a better sport for you to follow.

I also watch pro wrestling.

Marcus Smart doesnā€™t intentionally try to injure other players. Itā€™s not like heā€™s Grayson Allen.

No talent? He just won defensive player of the year. Are u intoxicated?

BTW, who remembers this play? At least Giannis has learned to take his playoff eliminations more gracefully.

Cowboy?

Or Giannis. Heā€™s a legit dirty player.

Edit - I see Iā€™ve been ponied by clips.

Luka mostly needs to not try to do too much. Itā€™s not about him having a great game, he needs to make sure the team is involved and the ball is getting passed a lot. When he dribbles for 90% of the possession and if he doesnā€™t get a good look kicks it out with 3 seconds left on the shot clock is when the team struggles.

I think this game will come down to CP3. Heā€™s played pretty badly since turning 37, he will need to have a good game.
