Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

I was so close to listing this one and even started out with it on my list.

Seven Samurai was on my short list for 50ā€™s movies. If I had done it on a different day I might have picked it.

Alright, Risky. Hereā€™s my M. Knight rankings.

Top Shelf
Sixth Sense - I had the twist ruined for me before I saw it :sob: In spite of that, I still enjoyed it.
Unbreakable - by far his best, imo. I have a lot of love for this movie.

Pretty good and entertaining
Wayward Pines - season 1
Servant - All seasons
Split
The Visit

Enjoyable but with some serious flaws
The Village
Signs
Wayward Pines - season 2

Ok-ish
Knock at the Cabin Door
Glass

Did not enjoy at all
The Happening
Lady in the Water

I have not seen the others not listed.

The number of films Iā€™ve seen prior to the 70s, especially pre-60s, is limited. Iā€™ve watched all the Hitchcock stuff, most of Wellsā€¦ Iā€™ve always intended to watch more but I struggle to get invested in many of these films - especially prior to the 50s.

Probably against the spirit of the exercise but I went with two in a few decades.

'50s : Vertigo / Touch of Evil
'60s : 2001
'70s : Apocalypse Now
'80s : Blade Runner
'90s : The Thin Red Line / Pulp Fiction
'00s : Mulholland Drive
'10s : Resisting adding the other Bladerunner. Letā€™s go Nebraska or maybe Edge of Tomorrow for pure fun. EDIT: I had Parasite in the 20s and itā€™s actually 2019. Parasite wins.
'20s : Everything Everywhere All At Once

20s is a tossup right now between PArasite and EEAAO for me.

One of those being released in 2019 should help with that problem.

Oh shit, youā€™re right. EEAAO - saw it with my wife then dragged my friends out for a second viewing. It had been years I went to the theater to see a movie then immediately went for seconds.

EE and Parasite are interchangeable in that spot.

Dammit, booger. Parasite was 2019. Doesnā€™t feel like it was that long ago. List edited.

If you can find it in you somewhere give Unbreakable a shot. For my money it is by far his best film.

I replace Signs with The Village and that covers all Iā€™ve seen of his.

Absolutely hated Unbreakable. Utter trash.

Utterly? Goddammit. I thought I liked it. Must be mistaken.

Soā€¦ you do that in real life? Is that how you interact with people? Like if someone really likes a piece of entertainment you dislike do you talk about your differences on the film (which is fun) or do you just drop ā€œitā€™s utter trashā€ and walk out the door.

Itā€™s a weird way to communicate with people both in real life and here.

Now weā€™re cookinā€™

Good list. I would move Wayward Pines up to top tier. I would move season 2 to the trash pile. I havenā€™t seen Servant but have heard good things.

Your Monster

6/10

The movie had material for a good movie but its vision and direction were uneven leading to some mixed messaging.

It doesnā€™t help the movie per se but knitwear is back baby! Lots of sweaters, vests and cable knit turtlenecks. Combined with courdory and it was a look for sure.

The breakfast scene with the newspaper in Unbreakable is one of my all time favorites. Hits harder as a dad.

Yes, thats an incredibly tense scene.

Unbreakable was fine; it had some good stuff. Granted that I havenā€™t revisited it since theaters back when it first released, but it wasnā€™t really strong enough to ever make me feel like I should.

Signs is completely ridiculous and I will make no attempt to defend it against charges that itā€™s stupid, but itā€™s a strong guilty pleasure for me anyway.
