Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

I thought Kinds of Kindness was really good, but it’s basically the last movie I’m going to question someone for not liking. Totally expect some to absolutely hate it.

From the Rewatchables FB group:

If you can only pick one film from each decade since you were born, what would they be?

Here’s mine (screw the birthday thing, go back as far as you want):

  • 60s: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
  • 70s: Rocky
  • 80s: Alien
  • 90s: Boogie Nights
  • 00s: Chronicles of Riddick
  • 10s: Bridesmaids
  • 20s: Godzilla Minus One

80s and 90s were absolutely brutal to narrow down to one.

Alien is a 1979 movie.

Ok pedant.

70s: Alien
80s: Empire Strikes Back

If the metric is best, here’s where I am:
80s: The Shining
90s: Schindler’s List
00s: There Will Be Blood
10s: Lady Bird
20s: Oppenheimer

If it’s about rewatchability then I’m subbing in Shawshank for Schindler’s and No Country for Old Men for There Will Be Blood, then keeping the other choices in place.

You can always go back further. I know you like older movies. I couldn’t find anything older than the 60s that I get super excited about.

70s: The Godfather Part II
60s: 2001
50s: 12 Angry Men
40s: Casablanca
30s: Modern Times
1920s: The Gold Rush

Those choices are about cliche as it gets, but I obviously shouldn’t sub in movies I don’t prefer just to be more interesting. I guess Modern Times wouldn’t be THAT common of a choice for the whole 1930s, but it’s a recognized gem.

Boy I knew you liked this one, but favorite of the 90s is high praise. Have you seen its predecessor, The Shop Around the Corner?

One of these is not like the others. :grinning:

Off the top of my head:

80s: Die Hard
90s: Shawshank Redemption
00s: Children of Men
10s: Spotlight

Spotlight was my close #2 behind Lady Bird for the 2010s, and I’m not sure it shouldn’t be my #1 also.

That doesn’t speak super well for the 2010s in film though.

70 The Godfather Part II
80 Paris, Texas
90 Before Sunrise
00 Before Sunset
10 The Social Network
20 Past Lives

30’s and lower I don’t feel good about picking one.

Hard to chose 50/60/70/80. Felt ok with the rest today.

40: The Red Shoes
50: All About Eve, is how I’m feeling today (probably hardest choice)
60: Dr Strangelove
70: Alien
80: Vagabond (second hardest, I had an urge to put either Repo Man or Married to the mob, fucking love those 2)
90: Trois Couleurs: Bleu
00: Mulholland Dr.
10: Amour
20: After Yang

Sure for today that sounds good.

If I have to go earlier, which is difficult because of a lack of options of movies I’ve seen:

60s: 2001
50s: 12 Angry Men
40s: Casablanca
30s: Mr Smith Goes to Washington
20s: Metropolis

His other one Columbus is also really good if you haven’t seen it. More typical realistic grounding, but still a similar vibe.
