We know pretty much nothing about the story for The Matrix 4 , but filmmakers Chad Stahelski and David Leitch —who directed second unit on the original trilogy before going on to become big directors in their own right with John Wick and Deadpool 2—recently confirmed that they helped out on certain action sequences for The Matrix 4 .
My kids are 15 and 11, we’ve watched a ton of movies together since shit went down. The ones I think both liked:
Rushmore
Best in Show
Airplane
Spinal Tap
Anchorman
The younger one and I watched the Christopher Nolan Batman films, which he loved. We also saw Armageddon, Independence Day, and 2012. He’s into that kind of thing.
The older one and I watched Election, 12 Monkeys, and some I’m probably forgetting. Obviously Election is extremely adult-themed, and 12 Monkeys was probably just up to the line of being too mind-bendy.
Thanks for the suggestions. We’ve seen most of them, but I’ll go over the ones we haven’t. Funny, my wife and I were just discussing Election and 12 Monkeys. I figured 12 Monkeys was probably too much.
The Christopher Guest mockumentaries are toward the top of our “haven’t shown them” list.
I was excited for this until I saw some gameplay and… idk. It was like an uncanny valley version of the gritty retro cyberpunk vibe I was hoping for half the time, and a complete miss the other. Half the footage was bright sunny California days. The fuck? The game is called “Cyberpunk” and it’s set somewhere called Night City. Sunlight bad!
This is a story of a women whose tenacity and strength helps her survive a Vietnamese prison, being involuntarily tortured and amputation, only to become a refugee on the bottom rung of American society, a cleaning lady. But her moral fortitude, belief in charity and good will shows the strength of true Christian character, enabling her to find comfort and happiness in helping others even less fortunate than herself, eventually bringing her a fulfilling life, love, and a happy ending.
The movie also stars Matt Damon
Seriously though Hong Chau is the only reason to watch this movie. She’s amazing in it.
Apologies to Zikzak. I thought I was just making a post but apparently I replied to his post on accident
I have two thoughts on this, which, in order of importance are:
Don’t care, has Keanu. I know Keanu is going to have like five lines in the entire game but I don’t care, it has Keanu.
Why not have cyberpunk in sunny California? The whole genre has been stale and played out since the mid 90’s, I’d love to see the folks who created Witcher 3 try a fresh take on the genre instead of ripping off Blade Runner for the 47,957th time.
The sequel to a movie I saw by accident but was improbably entertained by, Jumanji: The Next Level. Sadly this one was about as good as you’d expect (i.e. not good), largely because of utterly perverse decisions from the writers. They decided to not have The Rock pretend to be a kid and go on an adventure (like the first one), but to have him pretend to be Danny DeVito and complain about being old while emotionally reconciling with Danny Glover (actually a horse pretending to be Danny Glover). A few other characters did have a mediocre adventure, but that included Jack Black pretending to be black which felt just a little weird. All this said, I’ll still likely watch the next one.
Also I was recently excited to realise there was a 70s thriller about Nazi hunting that I’d never actually seen, so last night I put on The Odessa File. It started with an Israeli general sending a spy off to make sure a secret Nazi organisation didn’t fire rockets that would wipe out Israel. This one can’t fail, I thought. Tragically that plot line didn’t appear again for over an hour, as we watched Jon Voight with a really terrible accent very slowly read a diary and argue with his girlfriend instead. Things did pick up in the last hour when he met the spies and went undercover, but it was all curiously sedate even when he was fighting actual Nazis. Derek Jacobi was reliable fun as a good-natured Nazi forger, but his five minutes could not save it. Very sad.
Gotta disagree here. The Jack Black stuff was weird, but the movie was lots of fun. I loved DeVito and Glover going into the game with them. If the sequels continue being this fun, I look forward to as many as they want to make.
Watched the Lincoln Lawyer a couple of days ago and on Netflix and it was very good. Great cast: McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, William Macy, Michael Pena, Ryan Phillipe, Bryan Cranston. GIving McConaughey’s filmography a look over this appears to be the beginning of the McConaissance. Not really a bad movie after that.
But honestly he was great in a lot of pretty good movies before that. Tropic Thunder was good and he was hilarious in it, We Are Marshall was pretty good, Sahara was awesome, Reign of Fire was very good.
I’m a big fan of your work in the entertainment threads, but liking the DeVito/The Rock mash up is pure madness. Still, let’s not argue, my fondness for the first film means I too will watch however many they choose to make.
Last night I gave Cold Pursuit a spin. It’s a weird film, sort of an absurdist distillation of the Liam Neeson kills a bunch of folk genre. I found out afterwards that it’s based on a Stellen Skarsgaard original, and despite not really liking this I will be tracking that one down. It seemed like it wanted to be a deadpan comedy but the tone of the performances was all over the place, from the usual efficient gruff seriousness of Neeson to a massive, over the top turn from Tom Bateman as the main villain. Also, what I assume were attempts at some kind of satire with Native American characters just left me completely bemused. I suppose these days your can’t just make a straightforward Liam Neeson action movie so it was worth a go, but to me it didn’t really work.
