Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Possible for you to post some of your favorite shots? If you have any. I gave up before Grand Budapest. Might be time for me to revisit Wes.

I didnā€™t like the one about the little kids who ran away. That one just took to the twee to 11 and was too much for me. Darjeeling Limited was also quite bad.

All of his movies are perfect and if you donā€™t agree youā€™re a lib.

If the bootstraps fit!

How about Fantastic Mr. Fox? If you donā€™t like that Iā€™m a little worried for your well-being.

I havenā€™t seen that one, but Iā€™ll follow the co-writer Noah Baumbach anywhere after the wonder that was While Weā€™re Young. Iā€™m still making my way through Marriage Story one agonizing scene at a time.

I think itā€™s that Andersonā€™s stuff is fundamentally weird and absurdist in a way I donā€™t enjoy. For example, I enjoy a couple of Tim Burtonā€™s movies, but for the most part, the way he engages with reality makes me feel like this gif.

Fair enough. No Wes deep-dive needed then, I donā€™t think. His films all share a specific aesthetic and worldview. If one of his films isnā€™t for you, then likely none of them will be.* I find him delightful.

*Fantastic Mr. Fox might be an exception if you like stop motion.

Start and stop watching Anderson with Rushmore imoā€¦

After all this talk about Crouching Tiger, Iā€™ve decided to give Curse of the Golden Flower a go. Iā€™m about halfway through it. Sets and costumes are gorgeous. Chow-Yun Fat and Gong Li are of course great. Thereā€™s lots of cleavage. I give it three and a half bags of popcorn, strong recommend for anyone who liked Crouching Tiger.

Agree. Also love the use of color in the Jet Li movie Hero. You canā€™t really get a sense for it in the trailer, butā€¦

Hero GOAT. This is my all time favorite wuxia fight scene.

I had to watch the whole scene again before I could respond. Great choice. Two masters of their craft. Jet Li keeps it 100 when heā€™s like hey old man, play me a song I can beat this guyā€™s ass to.

I watched Valkyrie last night, hadnā€™t seen it since it was in theaters. Very good script and amazing cast and it might be my favorite Tom Cruise movie.

Days of Thunder is going to be soooooo disappointed.

Ya so will Risky Biz and Top Gun and MI and whatnot. Iā€™m just a huge WWII nerd and I thought they treated the subject matter quite well and again the cast was incredible

Tom Cruise is a tremendous actor, I donā€™t care what anyone says. Who has a higher good movie to bad movie ratio than he does? Would love to see him do comedic roles though, his timing is very very good.

Agree. He is a total nutcase but is a great actor and picks generally great scripts and directors to work with.

He gets knocked for ā€œplaying himselfā€ which Iā€™ve never understood. The way his emotion comes through is always true and right on ā€” heā€™s constantly reacting in subtle and interesting ways, and Iā€™ve never seen him in a false moment where I donā€™t buy his character or performance.

This is my favorite Tom Cruise line readings in yet another terrific Tom Cruise movie. Iā€™m not sure why I love it so much but it cracks me up every time.

Itā€™s true, though. I like Tom Cruise as an actor very much and his hit rate is off the charts, but he pretty much plays the same guy - himself - in every movie.
