Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Great cast, ton of fun. Nice to see Norton in a starring role again

Holiday viewing: watched Glass Onion, it fucking blew.

Also The Banshees of Inisherin. Not sure what I thought about that. Good performances, great cinematography, had personality, a bit empty at the center though. Read some reviews of it trying to see if there was anything I missed and they were all like “did you know it’s an allegory for the Irish Civil War”, youdontsay.jpg. Think I’m filing it under “pretty good”.

First half was good, second half was an increasingly incoherent and annoying mess, like bobman said really just trying to cover up for the lack of plot. Johnson is a talented guy but man when he is a bit off target it is really insufferable.

Watched and agreed

Watched Emily the Criminal

Thought it sucked. No idea how it has such a high RT rating.

I hate to hear that. Anything in particular that didn’t meet your expectations?

If you want to roll the dice just once more on a similar premise but very different tone (see trailer below), try out Buffaloed. Stars Zoey Deutsch, daughter of Lea Thompson from Back to the Future.

I had no expectations because I hadn’t heard of it before.

Felt that they rushed the plot during the last third of the movie.

Ohhhhh I can see that. The last third could have been an entire season of television. Breaking Bad spoiled us.

The Swimmers.

Really enjoyed this. True story about two Syrian sisters who had swum for Syria before trying to get to Europe as refugees.

Really well done. Lots of understated moments of threat/danger.

On Netflix.

Agree. I thought this was pretty good.

This will not surprise anyone, but Falling For Christmas (Netflix) is a terrible, terrible movie.

We chose The Whale for our annual Christmas Night movie. It was a difficult watch, but Fraser absolutely knocked it out of the park. If there is a way to get good odds on him winning the Academy Award, I feel like it’s a formality at this point. He is just so freaking good in this film. There was one point in the film where he proceeds to binge eat, and this look runs across his face of sheer relief/ecstasy, like a heroin addict about to get his fix. It is a lot of little things like that which, for me, highlight a truly powerful performance.

As for the film itself, it is based on a play apparently, so it is very much a character study. I cannot stress enough how difficult a watch it is; we found it very emotionally draining. For me, it falls into the same category of films like Manchester by the Sea or The Sixth Sense, in that I highly recommend seeing this movie, but it is doubtful that you will want to watch it again after having seen it.

It has a bit of an odd spread on Rotten Tomatoes, only 65% with critics but an audience score of 92%. I read several of the negative critic reviews and legit wonder if I even watched the same movie as these idiots. The Whale - Rotten Tomatoes

Especially in a world where hilariously-misleading mobile game ads are still allowed to flourish unchecked!

Sixth Sense is a great rewatch imo.

Meh, once the “twist” is revealed I see no need to rewatch it, but I get that some people might find like the kid’s performance compelling enough to watch it again besides that. I’m the same way with Usual Suspects.
