man I got a happy 7th birthday shoutout from the Son of Svengoolie during a November showing of the 1931 Frankenstein and it’s been all downhill from there. BERWYN

Black Adam was a bit of a mess but still very watchable

The middle aged dude sitting next to me who was talking to hims of the whole movie lost his shit at the post-credit scene

Henry Cavill cameo

On the topic of horror movies about the internet, I’m kinda enjoying Perfect Blue, an anime from 1997 that does a great job predicting how toxic online fandoms would become and how terrible the internet would be for women. Not sure id give it a strong recommend but it’s an interesting historical artifact.

I mean, we all know theyre setting up a new JL movie, right?

Oh wow, Cold Hell on Shudder is decent if you want a stylish Euro action/suspense thriller.

Finally watched Whiplash after all these years, at the request of dlk9s jr, who plays the drums. Lived up to the hype. Afterward, my son said he was blown away by how good it was and perhaps the teacher’s methods worked because he was “oddly inspired to play.”

Also caught a quick cameo from Gregg T. (#1 movie expertise), but man that does not look like something I’m dying to see

I think Covid broke my brain, b/c I don’t get Hereditary, like at all. I didn’t really find it an enjoyable watch, didn’t find it very scary, maybe a little unsettling, but I was mostly bored and just wishing it’d end, so I could do something else. I did laugh at a few scenes, so I guess there was some comedic value. Maybe I’m just a psychopath.

I’m enjoying the first few episodes of Cabinet of Curiosities a lot more.

Barbarian was the best movie I have seen in a very long time. The first jump scare is insane.I slammed my laptop shut.

Should probably spoiler that 2nd sentence.

First half of Barbarian was outstanding. Ending was a letdown but I’ll say it’s one of the best horror films of the year.

I know I’ve said this before, but One Cut of the Dead is some of the most pure chaotic joy I’ve had watching a movie in a very long time. Don’t read anything about this beforehand, also you must keep watching for the post-credits sequence.

Best smash cut of all time too!

I think what’s really interesting is how it uses trope characters to catch you up so it can spend more time on spooky visuals and “world building”. Like you know ‘the girl with a bad ex who needs to get away from it all and start fresh’. We just need one line and 2 unanswered whole calls to get her whole deal as far as the film needs us too. I saw Men which was the same basic set up but they really laboured the backstory. Same for the Hollywood asshole who thinks he’s a good person and same for the 70s guy.

And obviously the theme of men who bulldoze through life doing whatever they want and leaving messes behind is very strong throughout. A bit cheaty to have your main character spell it out explicitly 15 mins in but you can’t trust audiences these days.

I had actually never heard of the concept of smash cut. But after watching Barbarian I absolutely knew the definition of smash cut after you said it was a top 5 smash cut of all time.
