Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

I thought it was pretty common for schools to show 12 Angry Men in high school. Apparently that’s not the case.

That movie would be banned in most school districts these days, it’s got a lot of dangerous ideas in it about how juries shouldn’t just rubber stamp prosecutor charges. Who wants to live in a society like that?

Don’t know if I’m an outlier, but I saw very few movies in high school.

I can only think of two (Doctor Zhivago and Othello).

EDIT: Make that three. Watched Inherit The Wind in biology class.

My favourite Welles is “F for fake”, a very pleasant playful sort-of documentary movie (with Orson in a cape and hat as the narrator).

He’s such a likable character. It’s sad to think that he spent the final years of his life desperately (and unsuccessfully) trying to find some money to finish his projects. btw one of those (“the other side of the wind”) was edited into a final cut a couple years ago (with Netflix funding) and is very much worth watching, as is the documentary about it.

We didn’t watch many. Honestly the only other one I clearly remember is To Kill a Mockingbird, and we had to read it first.

eta: I think we might have watched West Side Story after reading Romeo & Juliet.

Hot take incoming but I would say Psycho is the only absolute must-see Hitchcock in this group and the rest are merely very good.

Birds should be up there too, what a masterpiece.

lol this list. Crazy how 40 years ago human beings became incapable of making good movies.

I think that’s just an incumbency bias where they won’t move a film that was on last year’s list down unless there is a new film that is so good that it is INARGUABLY better than the old movies. Of course that is never going to happen, so the tie goes to the runner and the old movie stays.

Lol I’ve seen 3 in the top 20 on that list

    1. 12 Angry Men (1957)
    1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
    1. Seven Samurai (1954)
    1. City of God (2002)
    1. Spirited Away (2001)
    1. Psycho (1960)
    1. Casablanca (1942)
    1. Whiplash (2014)
    1. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
    1. The Intouchables (2011)

Can’t quite remember if I’ve seen The Prestige. I think I have, so I left it off my list. And the new Top Gun? Really? I haven’t seen it, but I can’t imagine it’s THAT good. Like all time, must see good.

EDIT: wtf - this site keeps renumbering my list

No one’s ever “in the mood” for Schindler’s List.

dlk9s jr keeps wanting to watch Downfall and I keep telling him there’s no way the rest of the family is ever going to be in the mood to watch a German-language movie about Hitler (granted, it’s the good part…his downfall).

Watched it in high school.

Can’t believe some of you haven’t seen The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

10 minutes of pure genius (The rest of the film is fucking genius too)

Might need a City of God watch party.

Skimming over these last few posts:

No idea how so many people missed City of God, but I remember being blown away when it came out.

Please watch Casablanca.

Was trying to think of last 40 years movies that should all be in the top 100 and the prestige is def there. The matrix, back to the future, maybe fight club too were the ones that came to mind.

For everyone that skipped Schindler’s List, you can just watch this scene. One of of those things eternally burned into my brain. Incredibly powerful filmmaking.

As great as The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is, I think Once Upon a Time in the West is at least its equal. It’s kind of amazing how much of an absolute giant Sergio Leone is despite only directing a handful of movies.

Yep. Movie is okay but suffers a lot from that.
