Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

I thought 1917 was okay. A couple of very strong scenes with a couple strange plot conveniences. I’m not sure the effort involved in those two scenes warrants a best picture. The movie does a very good job of showing how quick and merciless and luck-based war really is. Cameras are ridiculous these days… seeing trenches in full HD is a sobering experience.

Can we please be done with the WW1 and WW2 movies?

I tried to read Atlas Shrugged but I gave up in the first 100 pages. A Brief History Of Time on the other hand is really good.

I actually think WWI is mildly underserved, movie-wise. WW2 has a nice, easy “This side was definitely much much worse” backdrop that lends itself to simple narratives. WW1 is more “This was really stupid and senseless and who even cares, ultimately” that’s harder to tackle satisfyingly, but imo much more worth it when done right.

I read Ayn Rand’s Anthem a long time ago.

It’s only like 100 pages and it saved me from ever wanting to read anything by her ever again.

I listened to Atlas Shrugged on cassette while driving to Denver in the mid 90s and it made the trip seem way longer

I strangely do remember one stretch driving north from Oklahoma toward Salina, KS and there’s like nothing, not even a tree or anything for hundreds of miles and the part where Dagny crashes and finds Galt’s Gulch was playing and it felt like I was there. Just truly a bunch of depressing nonsense

Yeah we read Anthem in a political lit class I took in college. It was just mind numbingly stupid.

Luckily we read a lot of good books, for the most part, although I think in hindsight the professor was probably pretty conservative.

Holy shit we should do a podcast where we triple feature the atlas Shrugged, Left behind, and gods not dead triolgies

Who would subject themselves to that!

I have seen all of these…including (especially?) the reboot with Nic Cage, which I believe is still on Netflix (US).

1917 is pretty damn great. It’s the sort of movie that sets out to be what the pretentious twats call “pure cinema”, and it largely succeeds at that goal.

Does anyone have the Regal Cinemas pass that gives you unlimited movies for $23.95 a month? Do I have that right? Seems like a great deal.

Pure gimmick you mean. Zero story or character. All style no substance.

I didn’t like it at all.

Not every movie can have the narrative originality of a 19th century romance novel for children.

I have not heard of that one but yeah that’s a great deal. There was a thing called Movie Pass but it went away when the people running it realized they were losing their asses.

Huge 1917 spoiler:

The crash made me laugh out loud. A giant empty field and it just happens to interact with our main characters? Hah okay. Reminded me of Tina from Bob’s Burgers learning to drive. The CGI during the water scene was awful and got a rise out of me as well.

I don’t have the Regal but I do have AMC Stubs for three movies a week.

The option to reserve seats in advance is everything I ever wanted. Plus you can see whatever format you want. Not that I’d ever watch 3D. It was all downhill after Avatar and Gravity.

Some sweet deals on concession food, too, but I understand most of you are fastidious paragons of health who would never let a pretzel bite touch their lips.

Underwater was great. Some obvious character stuff got left on the cutting room floor, but that’s fine. Works well as a horror movie.

Tina driving in the parking lot is one of my all time favorite television scenes
