Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Anybody else seen Scare Me yet?

Could one of you architects explain wtf a light socket is doing up there?

Mezzanine floor removed.

Seems obvious in hindsight.

You might elaborate a little for those of us who donā€™t know what a mezzanine floor is.

Of course Iā€™m an expert in such matters.

A mezzanine floor is a level. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

What was the purpose of this level? Is that where former tenants kept Harry Potter? Seems awfully short a distance from the former level base to the ceiling.

I was thinking about something this morning and thought Iā€™d tap the collective UP braintrust on itā€¦ What are some good ā€œNew Yearā€ movies? Iā€™m thinking they can be explicitly about New Years, or maybe just take place on New Years. Or even just thematically, like change or redemption. What do you all think?

(Bonus points if theyā€™re available on Netflix or Amazon.)

A heist pulled off over New Yearā€™s Eve with the GOAT on the team. Good watch especially in honor of the manā€™s recent passing RIP.

Good one!

A few others that take place after Xmas/before New Yearā€™s Day or are so centered on NYE that they may as well be about it.

Trading Places
When Harry Met Sally (culminates on NYE)
The Godfather II (fuck you Fredo!)
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown
About Time (that final party is a NYE party IIRC)
While You Were Sleeping
Bridget Jonesā€™s Diary (from Jan to Jan is about as NYE as it gets)
Four Rooms
Ghostbusters II
Mermaids
Fruitvale Station
Poseidon
Snowpiercer (NYE is the event that sets the movie in motion)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had to look up a few of these in IMDB. Long quote below just for fun, feel free to skip if not interested.

Classic, putting that on the candidate list for viewing tonight.

The gf loves this movie, so also a candidate.

Great movie, ofc, but not tonight.

Um, no.

Wasnā€™t there just recently some discussion in this thread about how rapey this movie is? Or am I thinking of some other movies?

Gf is a Sandra Bullock fan, so candidate.

She also loves this movie, candidate.

This one is more in my wheelhouse but Iā€™m not sure it will fly.

I actually may not have ever seen this one. Candidate?

I saw this in the theater back in the day but if Iā€™m going to do a Cher movie I think it would have to be Moonstruck.

Never heard of this but it looks intriguing.

I skipped this when it came out because it looked kind of dumb, but these days, sometimes Iā€™m in the mood for dumb. Maybe candidate.

Looks kind of interesting but I donā€™t think weā€™ll start a TV series tonight.

You are correct. Iā€™m not sure I hold the same view on the movie but would point out it was made by Richard Curtis, who has a history of problematic representations of consent in his earlier movies. Love, Actually still stands out as a WTF example of one awful male character after another.

This movie is the definition of dumb fun LOL. Itā€™s like a really dumb version of Titanic.

I am referring to the Chris Evans/Tilda Swinton film adaptation. Still on Netflix IIRC.

Itā€™s 5.7 on imdb though but isnā€™t terrible. IIRC it tries to be Love, actually. I wouldnā€™t normally recommend it but it obviously fits the category.

Ah, I see now. Putting this on my own list for sure.

Feel free to drop more ideas if any occur to you today!

The original is a disaster movie classic.

If this has been previously discussed I apologize, but has anyone seen The Godfather III with the new edits? Worth a watch?

Too busy watching all my other favorite gangster movies

(thatā€™s an inside joke, I hate gangster movies)

What about ā€œCity Of God?ā€
