Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore

Badie, of George Washington University, said the cost could be between $500 million and $1 billion, with the largest variable being the design.

Hmmm, San Fran just spent $225m just on nets for the Golden Gate bridge which is the same length.

Yeah I know I live in one! Just wild to think about how many more people were crammed into the same land 75+ years ago.

The Minneapolis bridge that replaced the collapsed one in 2008 cost like 250 million and itā€™s only like 15% as long as this one.

500 million seems like a laughable estimate.

500M is laughable, you arent building a 1.6 mile bridge for 1/4 of the cost of a pro football stadium

Manhattan population was half a million higher in 1910 than it is today

Wasnā€™t there more manufacturing in major cities back in the day? That could explain some of the population changes.

i think a lot of this is just more highways/higher car ownership means more people can live outside of city limits and commute now, if you include metro areas almost every city is bigger now except for maybe detroit and a few others

Housing got built in the suburbs, office towers got built in cities.

Explains some of it, but many states havenā€™t grown that much. Pennsylvania and Illinois are about 30% bigger than they were in 1920. Out West itā€™s obviously a lot lot different. Arizona has doubled since 1990.

Reading the article, it makes sense that the crew remained on board, but I definitely had not considered that people would still be on the ship

Impact was equal to 10 semi trucks at 80 mph or a good chunk of Saturn rocket!

Demolition of part of the steel truss structure using shaped charges. You might want to turn your sound down a little.

They still have all the cans sitting there after 6 weeks? For some reason I thought they would get them out of the way first, but that might be easier said than done.

By cans do you mean the shipping containers? Canā€™t really just pluck them off with the ship sitting in the middle of the channel. Those require some serious container cranes to lift, and Iā€™d guess there a science to removing them in a balanced way to keep the ship from listing.

They said the ship will moved to the dock within a couple of days. Presumably it will be unloaded then. The crew has been on board this whole time.

The crew of the ship was on board when they blasted the bridge? Dang
