It's time to delete Metabook, Twitter and TikTok (and Reddit). Fuck it, social media is cancer - a thread.

Turns out when you lose $700B in market cap in a year it might be appropriate to tighten the purse strings a little bit.

Is Meta also going to fire thousands of people without the due warning?

some of my colleagues are affected by this and seemed to be aware this was coming

60 Minutes is doing a piece on Social Media Brain™ now. One guy they had on said the people generating the hot takes on SM represent 7-8% of the far left and far right.

I heard a few days ago that 10% of American adults say they get their news from TikTok.

Probably, it’s better to pay out 60+ days of severance than have lame duck engineers around.

During my last company’s layoffs we actually just cut access to everyone but kept them on the payroll for X weeks. Helps with insurance and immigration that way.

I find that VERY hard to believe. What percent of American adults even have the TikTok app?

I used to think I was too old for TikTok. It turns out I was definitely too old to know how big it is. It’s more popular in the US than Twitter.

They are implementing a Job Roulette Wheel where each employee gets to step up and spin the wheel for their job. Red? Fired. Black? Still hired. Green? 50% pay raise. Erase that. 25% pay decrease.

Oh yeah this roulette wheel is in the metaverse.

Tiktok has absolutely exploded world wide.

One of the points raised by that 60 minutes piece was tiktok in China compared to America is much different. In China there are limits to what kind of content kids can access and can only access it 40 minutes a day. It’s wide open in the west. Tiktok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

I would say twitter used to be my most used social media but I use tiktok more now. I probably spend a not insignificant amount of time scrolling 3-4 times a week. Long enough that I regularly get the tiktok message you have been scrolling for a long time, why not take a break.

I think the only major country that tiktok has not infiltrated is India. I think they even got kicked out of India, but the rest of the world? By far the fastest growing social media app overall.

I have seen old men watching TikTok at the poker table.

maybe im an old, but i dont ever want to turn the volume on on my phone… i can’t think of a single time i’d rather see someone explain something on my phone rather than being able to read a tweet/story/meme at my own pace…

so i’ve never been fond of tiktok, or stories, or whatever old or new variation of those are.

Tiktok definitely the only time I turn on my phone’s volume.

I guess that’s me as well.

I thought basically no one over age 30 used it.

Lots of older pervs use it because teenage girls use it.

:face_with_monocle:

I am NOT exaggerating, this lady https://twitter.com/ACTBrigitte has the top listed tweet the last five times I commenced to use twitter. It was so confounding I figure I just need to unfollow her. I didn’t and don’t follow her.

I literally hate this lady now and she is always at the top of my feed.

This does seem to be a generational divide. I hate watching videos for information but I read an article saying that young people treat TikTok like Google. Like if they want to know something they will search for a video explaining it. Very alien idea to me. Probably not any worse than Boomers DOING THEIR OWN RESEARCH on Facebook, but probably not any better, either.

Thanks for the tip

Zuck is clearly degening it away on the Metaverse. They are desperate to have their own hardware that people need so that they can stop being Apple/Google’s bitch.
