It's time to delete Metabook, Twitter and TikTok (and Reddit). Fuck it, social media is cancer - a thread.

Has anyone seen “Th Social Dilemma” on Netflix?

Watch it and get some good confirmation bias about your decision to delete Facebook.

Simulwatching it with my sister tonight.

We’ll see if it convinces me to delete my Facebook account. I know that I’ve adjusted how I use it since this thread came out. I’ve unfollowed or unfriended everybody who posts exclusively about politics and haven’t posted about American politics on there in nearly 2 months.

Any negative post I make there I offset with a funny or happy post of some kind immediately afterward. I did this when I noticed that my feed was becoming too depressing.

Trying to watch it now but I really hate amateur ramblings on evolutionary psychology. “We’ve evolved to desire confirmation from our tribe, that’s why people keep coming back,” fuck no, it’s cause they’re bored and life sucks and it’s free.

I love amateur ramblings on evolutionary psychology - especially if I’m the rambler.

I’d like to ramble with you guys but I find it an inefficient way to spread my seed given the makeup of this forum.

Just watched it and got good confirmation bias about my decision to NOT delete facebook.

On my facebook I get no notifications, see nothing political, and have never intentionally clicked on an ad. I have access to personal updates and messages from real friends and family, and I get updated from the 5 or 6 hobby and special interest groups I’m a part of.

I think instead of deleting it, a better approach would be to get better at curating it. As soon as any friend posts something rabbit-holey more than once, they get ignored.

It’s a very useful tool if you can avoid the pitfalls.

You are kind of missing the point. The reason to delete has nothing to do with ones ability to curate their feed.

I literally unsubscribed from every friend I had a few years ago and logged on a few times a week to check notifications. The only reason I justified keeping it was because it’s how my friends and family invites people to events.

I decided to delete it because I don’t agree with the way they operate and their business model.

I am so glad I stayed on Facebook. Those that deleted it have no idea how fucking bad it is. One of my childhood BFF is a full blown Proud Boy bragging how he has 500K rounds of ammo. Had I not been on FB, he would have been one of the first people I looked up when the shit hits the fan.

I decided I had to delete my discord account after my nephew found me (fine), invited me to discord group with his high school friends (in retrospect, this should have been a no brainer no), and yeah…I want to be wrong, but man there is a far right meme culture that is spreading to people around his age. I hope it isn’t as wide spread as I fear.

I’ll probably sign up for another discord account at some point. But man discord made it hard to delete. In fact they gave me a well we will give you two weeks before we actually legit delete your account.

I’m still keeping Facebook because it is the source for my Pandemic Trivia, but it might go after that dies out.

Yeah, this is a really upsetting thing. All of the “non politicals,” many of whom really are genuinely not very thoughtful and not interested in politics, are just inundated with right-wing memes and framing.

No idea how to solve this problem. I did turn just turn a young Minnesota from Trump to Biden–he says, at least–by sending him hip-hop songs that talk about George Floyd. This feels pretty stupid, but it’s a language he speaks. This is the only family member I bothered with because I thought I had a chance.

But who knows how long it will last. Almost everything he interacts with on a daily basis is flooded with right wing garbage.

This is definitely scary, especially because the number of young people who get lured by right wing propaganda will likely vote at a significantly higher rate that young people who are idiots.

What does “top performing link” indicate?

The biggest problem for me is quitting Instagram. I like to post my photos to it to share with friends and family, and I do have some ambition of eventually selling my photos, but it’s hard to get additional exposure and feedback by other means. :-/

Try to get text chains going where you share pictures that way.
