“Digital nomad” is like that for me. Ugh.
Check out Cal Newport’s book Digital Minimalism. He doesn’t think you need to delete social media altogether but should rather find the most efficient ways to use the good parts and cut out all the bad parts, which is probably 95%+ of the average time on the apps.
I think this problem is like a lot of societal problems in that individuals attempting individual solutions won’t be enough. I think the change has to come at a legislative level, somehow clawing back our rights to our personal data in a way that prevents companies from harvesting it and using it for targeted advertisement, or maybe some type of governance over how algorithms can be developed and the impacts they have (for example, somehow not allowing engagement-maximization algorithms to be targeted at people under 18). I don’t know enough to know how these laws would have to be written, but without some sort of legislative fix I don’t see anything changing, no matter how many people delete facebook.
It’s incredible to think social media went from non-existent to ubiquitous and toxic in less than 20 years.
So they’re going to stop apologizing, do the same old shit and explicitly feed their users propaganda?
They think the only thing they did wrong was admit they were wrong a couple times. Good god.
Ethics are meaningless to the Zuck man. He’s basically said as much out loud.
How many deaths is Facebook is responsible for?
Certainly in the tens of thousands. Maybe hundreds. Maybe more, depending on how you view their responsibility for antivax content.
Rohingya genocide is partly on fb
WSJ tech reporter on Fresh Air yesterday:
Lol. Overpaid FTC fine by 5 billion dollars in hopes of future consideration.
The title of the WSJ is
How Facebook Hobbled Mark Zuckerberg’s Bid to Get America Vaccinated
which could be characterized as a slightly charitable headline given Lizard Boy was making backroom deals with KUSH to spread these lies.
The amount of data they have on people is amazing/frightening.
But remember TikTok is the big privacy concern right?
Nevermind that my phone is literally a Google product. I’m sure they aren’t collecting more of my info than TikTok lol.
These are human rights violations.
